Ramrod, we'll know in a little while - I put a duck stew on at 12:55, going to eat about 7:00 pm, got the breasts from the three Redheads, one Wigeon, and two Ruddy's in there - if it's not good my wife will let me know in a hurry! OH

Verdict is in, the women each ate two bowls! Took two hours to prepare and cooked six hours on low in the crockpot, can't tell one species of duck from the other once cooked - GOOD! OH

Duck is one of my favorites things that fly to eat personally, with Goose a close second. I have even eaten swan before as that do actually hunt for that here in Nevada and it tastes pretty good too. That exlcludes chickens, talking about wild birds.

Hey Carmillus, Merry Christmas to you and yours my friend! It depends alot on what they eat. The "whole you are what you eat" concept applies. Corn fed deer, mmm mmm good. Tastes much better than one foraging on grass or other greenery in my opinion.

As far as Duck goes, I am not getting into a major ornithology lesson but of a taste/culinary perspective...

Two types of Ducks, Dabbling and Diving. Why I asked OH if the were diving ducks or not.
Dabbling Ducks eat just what is below the surface and will also eat grain and corn as far as I know.
Diving Ducks eat crustaceans and invertebates. I can tell you that I personally know they also eat vertebrates also. I was hunting a few years back and saw a duck flush from the water. I knew it was a duck and almost out of range so I shot it. I should have known since diving ducks have smaller wings for swimming and have to "run on the water to get going" compared to a dabbler like a mallard that can pretty much launch almost straight up due to larger wings.

Anyway, long story shorter, said dead duck is retrieved. I see a tail hanging from it mouth and think "what the hell is that". I make a tight loop with my index finger and thumb at the base of his neck and slide it towards his mouth and low and behold, out pops a 10 inch Carp. True story. It appears my number 2 load of birdshot had interrupted his meal.

Point is if they eat fish, they tend to taste fishy. I don't care for them but I guess it depends how cooked. When hunting if I see one I normally give it a pass. If I was hungry or knew the best way to cook one, I sure would eat them. Now the dabblers, breast said bird, egg and breadcrumb and a quick bath in hot olive oil. Good tasting stuff.

Also, some people just don't prefer the taste. I love it my wife does not, so more Duck for me.

Had those ""X-tra"" pistols, I got last week, so I went and done a little ""gun trading"" today ----- ended up with this 1976, Winchester Model 94, 30-30 ____ my very first deer rifle was one just like it,only it was a 1970 year production*** (close enough )___this one shows, a little wear from age,but so do I __ everything works & moves tight,and the guy I got it from said, it patterns well **** it will be after Christmas,before I can try it out, but I'm thinkin', it'll be just fine !!!!!! ------- I'm thinkin' I'll take the scope mounts off of this one ???? ____ I had rather shoot open sights, inside 100 yds ___ will just have to shoot a few rounds and see ?????

Hey Monk, I'm with you on taking that offset scope mount off the side of that Winchester ! They just don't belong on there ! But on the other hand, I can't focus like I used to so I'm guilty of using a scope most of the time, but not on a 30/30.

Speaking of scopes...

I just picked up my DPMS Oracle .308LR AR-10 on Monday. Interesting story but I was going to order a Barska 6x24x44 Swat Sniper Scope for 300 to 800 yard work and a generous young man that works at the store knew I was looking for one. There are many cool details to the story working up to this but in a nutshell, he brings in the same scope from his personal collection, not store stock and gives its to me for Christmas when I pick up my new rifle. I was really touched by the gesture and gift, and of course, the least of which was an awesome scope. This really made my Christmas. He and I will hopefully head out soon to the range or whatever outdoors soon. I invited him out the range yesterday to test out the new hardware but he wasn't sure if he would come Christmas Eve and all. So some other time...

9am yesterday, the range is empty like I thought it might be. Sweet!!! My son shows up to "help". The scope was only "rough" mounted with no laser boresighting, etc so I set a target at 50 yards. No lead sled just bipod and sandbags. Cheap 147 grain .308 Czech ammo (gun can also shoot 7.62x51 NATO) in case I go thru alot of rounds to sight it in. Zero out the scope knobs. 1st shot, 2 inches dead left of bulleye. Sweet! One adjustment dead center 2nd shot. Zero at 50 yards with just 2 shots, too good to be true! We did some calculation together (had a great time doing it too, fun day at the range with my son!) and adjust scope for what we thought would be zero at 100 yards. 3 shots in a row and a 4" steel plate swung about 6 full revolutions before it quit swinging from direct hits. Only 5 shots and zero at 100 yards. Off to the 100 to 400 yard range.

BTW, DPMS suggest to break in the barrel by running a bore snake with oil on it between each fired round for the first 25 rounds and every 10 rounds thereafter up to 200 rounds. Took awhile but that is what we did up to maybe 60 rounds for the day. Break in to be continued...

My son is impressed so far as am I but he is skeptical about 2 things as far as extended range accuracy...
The fact that it is not an 1000 dollar or more scope. Also, 308 with a 16" barrel. I want to sight in a 400 yard zero, too many variables, never close to accurate at 800 yards, he says, blah, blah, blah. Fine, we will do 200 and go from there.

More adjustment and calculation and a 4" plate direct hit at 200 yards, five times in 5 shots. We lock the turrets there. Instead of scope adjustment, we calculate estimated mil dot holdover and hold under for 100, 300 and 400 yards. The gun and scope were very accurate with the day ending with 5 shots each on a 12" plate at 400 yards, all 10 direct hits. I personally will take that all day. He is right 600 to 800 is a whole different ball game of variables but mainly shooter, ammunition, calculation or environmentally based.

I don't work for the DPMS or Barska, nor is this an endorsement. Just my experience thus far. I will update more as I use them. Pretty sure that DPMS is US made. Not sure about Barska but I have not looked to find out, nor do I care since it was a fine gift and works great.

Here are 2 plates at 300 yards, 4 shots, no misses. The one with 3 hits was a 10 inch plate, they other with one hit was a 6 inch plate. I sprayed a heavy coat of flouescent orange paint before each round. Really helped with seeing the location of the hit on the plate. Camera died so only 2 pics for now.

Probably will take out the lead sled next time with better ammo to see what the setup is realy capable of but pretty damn happy so far. We both had no breakfast and to much coffee but we will see once locked into the sled. I am sure the MOA will be tighter so I can see what is really capable of.

That is a fine looking old M94 Monk; give some thought to a vintage peep-sight. This old M94 (mfg in 1953) wears a Redfield receiver mounted peep and Lyman still offers the Model 66 for the Winchester M94. I find the carbines are easier to shoot accurately using the peep than the factory iron's but you don't loose the vintage look like you do with a scope.

My 11 year old Samuel took his first steps into the world of firearms ownership this morning by receiving a genuine Daisy Red Ryder BB gun! After reviewing basic safety once again, we made a cardboard box target and hit the backyard for some target practice.

Hey Jerry, that sounds like a great time. Good shooting, 300 yards?? I'm lucky to see the horizon, so the 50 or 100 would be my limit. Congratulations on the new gun and a great gift.

Mike, Samuel must be a happy young man this year. I remember my first Daisy BB gun, I really and truly did nearly shoot my eye out. I bought my son one for Christmas two or three years ago. He was about 40-years old but he loves the Christmas Story so much that I thought I'd buy it as a joke....no joke to him, he keeps the squirrels out of the bird feeder with it all summer long. Doesn't hurt the squirrel but sure gets his attention.

OH and Monk, those Winchesters are such a classy looking rifle. Wish I had bought one earlier in life but it's getting too late now. But, who knows, maybe I'll catch a good deal on one.

Very cool Mike! Looks like a happy young man and a great time. My grandson also got one and he is just 5 years old. He has been going on big game hunts since three and been taught safety the whole time. But he is still just a 5 year old. I personally would have waited to your son's age but not my call, it's my son's. Of course he can't use or possess without supervision. The .22 Henry I bought for him I won't give to him till he is 13 years old or so (have to see), that is my call.

Mike, I recieved my Daisy BB gun when I was 8. Had alot of memories of going out with friends plinking. I still have it and it still works, not as powerful as it once was, but it still shoots. Mine came with a scope, now long gone , but otherwise its still alltoeghter. I hope your son has alot of fond memories with his. And I didn' shoot my eye out. ftd

I started yammerin' for a BB gun when I was 6 years old. We were pretty poor so my folks told me (probably in an attempt to instill some responsibility in me as much as not having the money) that If I could save the money to buy it, I could have one. They did their part by allowing me to keep the return of the deposits on pop bottles. I can't remember if the deposit was 1¢ or 2¢ at the time but I saved and scrounged pop bottles where I could find them until the summer I turned 8, I had the approximately $6 cost of a basic Red Ryder.

New Harmony Indiana is a small town but I couldn't shoot it in town even back in those days, so I had to wait until we made a trip to my grandpa's farm over in Illinois. The wait was excruciating but finally the big day came. A bunch of my cousins were there and it didn't take long until we had burned through my small stash of BB's. I hunted around in the driveway for a rock that looked about the same size as a BB and stuck it down the barrell. JAMMED!! My dad had to take the gun apart to get it out and it never did shoot right after that. One more of life's cruel little lessons learned.

And proving, once again beyond all doubt, that Marines and Neanderthals share basic DNA characteristics.

No M-16 for me Ferg. Except for a month of ITR after boot camp, I was M-14 all the way.

I think it's unconscionable they arm our troops with that pea shooter (M-16).

I loved my CAR-15 in Viet Nam, but man, that M-14 was a wonderful rifle.

Wish I could afford to own one right now.
