All About Pocket Knives

I have the 3rd from a recent mailbox haul to post as today's comfort knife guys! This one is an unmarked Russian built 11 1/2" oal scale-release for closing only "Plastin-3" folder/D2 drop-point blade with long-pull on both sides, SS partially jigged liners, dark wooden accented covers that display a beautiful ringed pattern and are secured with screws, adjustable pivot, and pocket-clip. Has a hefty weight of about 7 oz.'s, and came extremely sharp. In the pictures it showed a thumb shifting the front cover to the right which usually indicates a scale-release opening knife, but when I received mine and shifted the cover nothing happened. I examined the insides looking for a spring, coil or leaf, but after discovering it didn't have one I sat back to figure out my new knife. After some experimenting I found that the shifting cover is strictly for closing the blade since without the shift the blade is locked in place. I also found that if I shift the cover while closed and applied a firm flick of my wrist the blade flies open all the way to the locked position. Very unusual but loads of fun!

A good looking blade there Marc. Interesting about the operation of the scale lock. So I'm figuring by what you are saying, the blade can't be closed unless you shift the scale. So kind of a hybrid scale / frame lock? And with the ease of opening, it sounds like it would be quick to deploy. Cool find.

Sorry my friend, it is always a traumatic decision when you have to end a pets life, but it is a better result for your friend. I have seen people not make the decision when they should have, and it just too stressful for the animal.

You got it Smitty! With an auto scale-release, the blade deploys automatically when you shift the front cover to the right, but on this one the only purpose of the shifting cover is to unlock the blade when you want to close it. That's a good name for it "hybrid scale/frame lock"! The only other purpose for the shifting cover is for fast opening but not automatically, instead it's done by shifting the cover and then "wrist flicking" it open. If you attempt to "flick" it without shifting the cover the blade won't budge. It's a very well-built knife with solid lock-up and zero play. US$99. + $12. shipping via "minonotorono" on ebay, or, www.knives-russia.com , for somewhat cheaper.(US$79.)I got the second site from a card they included in the package and I assume it's cheaper there due to no ebay fees. They have a great selection of knives worth viewing, but if you're interested in autos be sure to read the descriptions, because many of the models with buttons are button-locks, not autos.

It was another fruitful day in my mailbox today guys, but 2 of the 3 that arrived are autos waiting for their blades to arrive so I'll only post this one as today's, you guessed it, Comfort Knife! This is a Parker Jumbo slip-joint lockback that is 11" oal and sports a SS bayonet blade with n/n and etches, N/S bolsters that are engraved on both sides, brass liners and pins, thick jigged brown/white stag covers with N/S oval inlay, and forward lockback blade release. Weighs-in at a nice n' heavy 12 oz.'s, and came well sharpened. Made in Japan by hand in the 1980's by the late renowned knifemaker Tak Fukutu. When I first saw the price it seemed high to me, but after handling and examining my new knife I now feel it's totally in line for this knife. It will join it's mates in the BIG knife pile!

Cudgee my Friend great knife . That Lambsfoot with the Ironwood covers is a great combo . Really like the lined sheath as well .

I had 3 more manuals come today, but I'll post em' one-at-a-time so as to stretch em' out a bit! The first is this AG Russell "Strikeforce" lockback, and it's 8 1/2" oal/VG-10 blade with an oblong hole instead of a stud for 1-hand opening, aluminum bolsters, G-10 or C/F covers I'm not sure which, thick SS liners, adjustable pivot, lanyard hole, and a pocket-clip. Nice comfortable weight of about 4 oz.'s, and arrived extremely sharp. Has smooth walk and loud snappy talk along with impeccable fit n' finish. Built in Japan. The "run-up" where the tang meets the spine is invisible on this knife which is an indication of a well built knife. Purchased from Mark at SSk!

The pictures don’t capture the solid feel of that knife. It’s one of my favorites. If I remember correctly, that knife cut me when I barely touched the blade while taking pictures, it’s razor sharp. Love these Strikeforce knives. I have one in my personal collection. Glad you like yours.

Marco, can you open this one handed with that hole? Got a couple of chinese kabar knives made like this but can not get enough grip with my thumb to get them to flip open. Of course they are not the same quality as what you have here. Great looking knife!

The sources I've been using lately WILLIAM are, Mark's SSk store, a couple of AAPK stores that won't ship outside the US so Mark has purchased the items for me and added a very small mark-up just to cover his time, and, I found a REALLY great Canadian site, www.warriorsandwonders.com , or, "Blades Canada Cutlery" if you just do a search. This last one is NOTHING like Hero(who haven't changed their lousy policies BTW), they ALWAYS update their stock, have a HUGE selection, and ship VERY fast at a reasonable cost. The prices are in CDN funds, and although they seem a bit high if you do the conversion from US to CDN money and add the usually high US shipping charges, they are quite reasonable. Be sure to read Mark's(SSk)comments, he has one himself and his high praise of the knife helped me finally pull the trigger. When you have some spare time check the price for the same knife at www.arizonacustomknives.com , and you'll see how much people like this knife. Mark's price was FAR more reasonable, although, it wasn't a cheap knife by any stretch of the imagination.

You do remember correctly Mark, and I'm so sure of this because I had cut myself on another knife at the same time the Strikeforce bit you and we had a short discussion about it. Thanks again!
