Hatchet

I found this adv. hatchet at an antique shop. Brooks Grand Rapids, Michigan. 7 inches. Not sure if they made it or were a hardware store?

That is a very cool little hatchet.
Does it have any markings on the opposite side or just on the side you showed?

hey bob, googled brooks, grand rapids and found no reference to a hardware or axe company. could be a paperweight for a now defunct co. it's cool!

It's a Philadelphia Tool,co, they were bought by Plumb in 1889.

This one's not a usable hatchet but instead is a cast iron wall hanger that expresses an anti-prohibition sentiment. There's a lot of them around, including repros, that are for prohibition and show a likeness of Carrie Nation but say "Cut out the Whiskey" on the handle. I like this one a lot more, it expresses an attitude I've always adhered to.

I'm not absolute on this, but your hatchet, I believe is used for breaking peanut brittle candy! I have a couple of antique sledge hammers that size, with candy makers names on them, and they were given to purchasers of peanut brittle to break the brittle into smaller pieces.

I believe your hatchet is used for opening and closing vintage wooden cigar boxes.The blade is used to pry up the lid;the notch in the rear of the blade to pull the tacks holding the lid;and the hammer head to close the lid afterward.These were in use in most shops that catered to the cigar trade.Here are a couple of mine even though they are not hatchets.One has a cigar cutter in the end.

A NICE EARLY HAND FORGED TOMAHAWK / HATCHET WITH A TACK PULKLER ON THE END OF THE HANDLE. THE HEAD IS 3 1/8" LONG. THE CUTTING EDGE IS 1 5/8" LONG. IT IS 7 1/16" LONG WITH THE HANDLE AND IT WEIGHS 6 OZS WITH THE HANDLE. WHOEVER MADE THIS ITEM , PROBABLY A COUPLE HUNDRED YEARS AGO, DID A VERY NICE JOB. THE HEAD IS FORGE WELDED TO THE HANDLE.
I pick this up for $24.00, I thought it was a fair price.
