All About Pocket Knives

This is a custom that; I am considering bidding on. What concerns me is; the way the large pin in the bolster looks; to me looks to large and kind of ragged. Does it look poorly done; or is it OK? Thanks.

Well, this one raises questions for me. It is a linerlock, so I would not have used pins to assemble it. I would have used screws and a pivot pin assembly instead of a pivot pin. Most custom knifemakers will stamp or etch their names on a custom knife. Mostly you see a stamp for those that use a forge and an etch for those that do stock removal - of course this is not 100% true, but a generalization. A custom knifemaker is not supposed to etch his/her name in a purchased blade or a kit knife. But for a production knife being customized it is entirely acceptable, usually an etch is used.

He has a scrimshaw knife (has makers mark) listed that has a thumbstud, it too appears to be peened. I thought that was odd since a threaded post would be so much easier. A knife in his me page is similar but I can see why pins were used on that one (may have adhesive under the ivory and pearl). When I look at the construction style of those 3 knives they are very similar - same maker?

Considering that it was peened on black lip pearl (which cracks more easily than white MOP), it does not look to bad, though it appears to be a bit ragged. I would consider having an engraver dress it up.

I do see what look like scratches in the black lip pearl and I wonder how far they go. It is much easier to find cracks in black lip pearl by taking digital pictures of it in many angles (all 4 to 5 times larger than the knife). It can be very hard to see cracks in black lip pearl - the digital pictures make it much easier to find a crack.

I found myself asking, "why did he do it that way?"

why would someone peen a pin to the point of cracking in pearl? not too smart, I have cracked pearl just pushing a pi nthrough an oversized hole, peening it is a disaster waiting to happen, and what if the pivot works loose?

Yeah, and it went for $430.00 As I looked at the construction - I kept asking why. looks like he is selling more ivory knives - likely the real reason he is selling these. To beat an eBay ivory ban.

Did you win this knife luckypaul? It is a far better knife and the steel maker is Devin Thomas. It's important (IMO) to know the pattern welded steel maker and the mosaic damascus maker as well as the knifemaker and when he made it. When I order a billet, I write the name of the mosaic pattern, materials, as well as the name of the steel maker.

Hukk, I was to slow and got out bid. I ran across a website (Arizona Custom Knives); that have some nice knives; even let you make 3 payments. I have a lot of customized factory knives; but no true customs; one is in my future. I went to the Blade Show in Atlanta; back in the 1980's; it was hard to believe someone could take steel and the Handel material; and turn it into things of such beauty.
