Here's an owl I carved out of basswood. I'm still experimenting with wood stains. I like how he turned out, but now that it's finished I see a few things I'll do differently on the next one!

Excellent carving and finish TM Do you plan in advance how the carving will look, draw centerlines etc...or do you just dig in and see where the wood takes you? Nice and symetrical, which can be tough to do at times. Great job!

Thanks guys!
I do plan in advance on how I want a carving to look. First, I'll sketch something up or find a picture for reference. I found a picture of a similiar carving and used it to do this one. I changed a few of the features from the original.
After I have my reference pics, I do a rough sketch on the wood I plan to use. Center lines are a big help!
After that, I start cutting - most of the time after you begin, you have to change things a bit as you go.
