All About Pocket Knives

Hey there folks!

I finished up the last few projects for a while (starting to get that outdoor bug) and for whatever reason, the zenlike-patience required to get a good macro photo with my old olympus 300 just wasn't there. I've struggled for the last year or so trying to get good knife pictures with it, and I figured it was as good a time as any to pick up a new camera. I ended up with a Canon SX100IS, and lemme tell ya, the macro mode + Manual focus on this this is exceptional

My favorite pattern in the world (should be obvious by now ) the Gec #25

Tidioute Easy Open Sheepsfoot model with Stabilized Redwood and some painstaking filework. I dunno if I like this redwood, now that I've worked with it. the eyes seems to pick up compound from the buffer really easily, and it's hell to clean out without killing the finish.

Great job on two beautiful knives. Great pics too. The quality of your work really shows in those tight shots. Very impressive.

I like both of those - A LOT! I really like both woods and have a bunch of both stabilized. I think I can help with the eyes in the Redwood - since I have a lot of that stabilized Redwood on hand.

1.) You can use Zap A Gap, its a cyanoacrylate glue that fills in gaps that would otherwise fill in with gunk from a buffer.

2.) Here is a picture of my sawdust capturing method and the results - a baggie of sawdust from stabilized redwood scraps. This is the WORST PIECE OF REDWOOD I HAD as far as cracks and inclusions. I still need to put it on a knife. The last picture is of how it looked before any fill. You can see all the eyes in the last picture - they will pop out A LOT once I finish the wood on a knife and it should be real nice - like yours I hope.

I filled the voids with the Redwood sawdust I made and collected from stabilized scraps from pieces I cut from the ends of these 2 scales (bookmatched). I then used a cyanoacrylate glue that's thin and penetrates to solidify the sawdust. Once dried I sanded the scales flat again. You can see that there is still a void or 2, but those can wait until I have the scales on a knife - as I shape the wood the voids will likely decrease in size.

I apologize for my lengthy post - I don't mean to detract from the beautiful work you have done - again! I hope to be of help with handling voids and cracks in the handle material.

No harm no foul Hukk I've been seriously considering sanding off what finish I have and reworking that single blade. I have some Zap A Gap, but in the past I've ended up with spotty finishes because of it. either I sand to much of it off while smoothing it out, or I end up with this thick layer of CA leftover.

well Adam, I have DSL and the pics still havent loaded in 10 minutes. So I'm gonna go with my gut and say nice job!

well, I said I was gonna revisit the EO jack, and I did. Sadly, I let myself get frustrated, and I put a huge gouge in the bolster with a file. See what happens when your not in the right mindset?

Anyways, I'm not one to let something like that sit in the spares bin, so I did something I've not done before. I took some 410 stainless sheet I had lying around, and some black G10 composite and gave her the ol' shadow treatment. New liners, new scales, used a stainless washer to peen my pivot onto, and was able to sharpen up the filework a bit. My usual pictures didn't seem to fit the style, so I brought my mac into the shot. Somehow I think the end product is a bit more "high tech" than GEC envisioned.

I'll get to work with that redwood again, I have a tiny bit left, another knife, another day
