All About Pocket Knives

In looking at Jim Sargent's book, Am. Prem. Guide to Razors & Knives, I've found it to be excellent........a ton of info and easy to use.........thanks WVTrapper for recommending it.
For anyone who also has this price guide, on Page 314 under Case Genuine Stag Sets.........there is listed for 1981, six knives with the engraved bolster value. I have these 6 and two other incomplete sets. they are serial numbered
On page 316---for Plain Stag Sets, Engraved & Serial #'d & Individual stag knives........there is listed 1981 9 Dot Plain Set (No Etch)....under that topic are listed the same 6 knife pattern #s as on page 314 and also shows a 'value engraved'. The prices are different.........what is the difference between these 2 listings?

IIRC the 5254 1981 mint set(the one with engraved bolster and serial #) was a stag set. I'm thinking that there were no plain sets for that year, but the same patterns were offered as open stock without the bolster engraving and ser #.

You could be right. What is confusing that on pg. 316 the title over these knives is 1981 9 Dot PlainSet (No Etch). Some of the other years listed have the red, brown, etc. etch on the blades. The 9 Dot listing has two columns----one for unengraved bolsters and one for engraved.
You may be right about the listing on the pg. 316 not having serial numbers.

I'm just not sure which category these knives would be in though I think it's the genuine stag set. I'm not wanting to sell----just want to know exactly what they are.

Anyone else want to weigh in?

They made 5000 stag sets of 1981 9 dot without engraved bolsters
I had one with all the original packing slips straight from Case
that I sold right here in my store 2 1/2 yrs ago
This set was often refered to as The No Etch set
I also still have the engraved bolster set in my collection
No fixed blade knives came with this set

Hmmm. I gotta old Case news letter that states that they would continue to offer the 5254 1981 mint set but were going to discontinue the regular set and offer the patterns in open stock instead of having the usual regular sets. Evidently they changed their mind. Thanks for better information

Blade Runner.........you might have something there. All of the knives I had questions about have engraved bolsters----------I just didn't know what the difference was on those 2 different pages.
I have the engraved bolsters with gold inlay that are lightening S 7 Dot
and engraved silver that are 9 dot.

But back to you........I have 3 of the 5254SSP that are stag handled and plain bolsters but so far haven't found them listed anywhere because they're NOT 9 Dots, but 6 Dots--1984. I have about gone crosseyed trying to find a value and decided that they don't exist---what I'm holdin' in my hand must be a figment of my imagination. They sure are 'purty' even if they don't exist.
