Nice knife, I know some of you feel it's sacrilege; to do this to an older knife. Not me, never met a pitted and banged up looking old knife; that I liked.

I like everything about this knife, except the cleaned and polished part. I don't know what shape it was in before the cosmetic deed was done, but I can generally clean a knife to suit me without paying whatever price one has to pay to get a knife down to white. I just pack them as they were meant to be packed and they'll come around alright. Joe

In these cases, "before and after" pictures are about the only way to "justify" the reason for the restoration.
If you've got one that's "just an example" (kinda rough) for historical or research reasons or just to say "yeah, I've got one", I say "clean that sucker up"! (be sure to get that BEFORE pic!!)
Depending on what stage of "decay, ware, neglect, etc.", determines how much, if any, restoration would be acceptable. Yet still "to each his own".
Dave did a great job on that old Schrade in his "general discussion" post!!

I try to buy old, original knives in good enough condition that they don't need the spit-shine buff job in the first place. The only time I do get some old rustbucket that needs cleaned is when I pick one up at an estate auction or elsewhere for peanuts and then I will have it cleaned simply so I can sell it for more money than I'd get otherwise. But even then I would consider it highly unadvisable to clean a true antique knife pre-WW1 and over a 100 years old. The antique value is then destroyed and the real high-dollar buyers of the top maker old knives (like Holley, New York, Northfield, etc.) simply don't want or buy cleaned knives, they want original stuff. So, IMO, many of these clean jobs are like putting pearls on a pig and unnecessary. Eric

Thanx for all the advise and ccomments guys. I am just amazed at how clean and crisp the tang stamps are on this. I have bid on it and immediately got overbid. Any consensus on final cost. I realize Ebay prices are "flighty".

No idea where that poor thing will end up price wise. I'd hazard a guess that it didn't look that shiny when it was made.

This isn't an EO and it has a tipped punch, lost shield, and a small chip out of the back scale. I got it for $20.40 and shipping.

It has not been messed with. The EO reminds me of granny in a mini skirt. I can't recall whose quote that was but it is appropriate to my feeble mind.

oman, I asked the seller if the knife blades wobbled. The response was , they are tight. Just a little more info.

Hey don't knock granny; wouldn't mind seeing this 58 year old granny in a mini skirt any day. Remember her; quite a looker now and back in her day as well.

The seller states that the knife "Has genuine black bone handles", They look like black comp. to me.


If they are black composition/celluloid, it is the first time I have seen this used on a Miller knife.

Ahhhh. That infamous Ebay "Genuine Black Bone".

See it often in the descriptions of Robeson auctions. All of them are black composition.

This is the closest Robeson ever got to black bone, as far as I know.
