All About Pocket Knives

My Sargent's price guide doesn't have it. Any help much appreciated.

Pocket Knife Traders( Vol.9) 2010 has it @ $900.00 Mint condition. Pattern # 5488 Big Congress.

Price/Zalesky (15th ed.) values are $850 for 5488 and $450 for 6488.

Ritchie and Stewart 5th edition:
5488 $1000
6488 $500

Just out of curiosity, I pulled out my 1978 price guide by Ferguson:
5488 $140.
6488 $35.
Don't you wish you would have bought a boat load back then?

My Sargents (7th edition) lists the 5488 at $1,200 and the 6488 at $650. The exact wording of the listing is as follows:
5488, 1970, 10 Dot (10 Dot to USA), bone.........1,200 Same wording for the 6488.
I don't understand exactly what the (10 Dot to USA) means?

If you look at the last 2 listings for the '88 pattern on page 298 in Sargent's 7th edition he lists the straight 10 dot 5488 at $900 and the straight 10 dot 6488 at $500 . The 10 dot to USA designates that the master blade (front large blade that opens to the right) has 10 dots and the back large blade is marked USA only with no dots (this blade would be left over from the 1965-1969 era) . As a general rule the front large blade is a sheep foot and the back large blade is a spear , however , I have seen them reversed .

Bob, thanks for the clarification. I didn't even notice the straight 10 Dot knives listed just a couple of lines further down on the page.

There are at least eight different 1970 large congresses listed in three different price guides, any where from $500 to $ 900 in mint. The ones that use the old blades with U.S.A. on one side and the ten dots on the other I beleive are called transition models and fewer were made, making them harder to find. So maybe a picture whould help as to pattern number, bone type,
condition and then value.
