Just wondering how the hunters are fairing where the season has opened...?

Sunday was our first day. I wasn't able to make it in the morning. I did make it out for an evening hunt but had no luck.

I seen a hen turkey with a bunch of her young though. That was very cool Our turkey population was nil not very many years ago. Now they are starting to take the place over

I can't blame you for that. The mosquitos where I hunt are almost the size of humingbirds They are not much fun to deal with.

Also, it's supposed to hit 90 degreas here tomorrow . Something just doesn't feel right hunting for deer in 90 degree weather. I don't think the deer like to wonder around much at those temperatures when the sun is up either.

I figure I'll be back at it this weekend

Yup, at those temps the deer here in cen. Ms. seem to lay low, especially the big-uns.

Try California's "A" Zone. This one runs the first Saturday of July to the last Sunday of July for archery. For rifle season it is the first Saturday of August to the last Sunday of September. It is not uncommon to be stuck in 100 degree weather, even 110 degrees. The hottest I can recall was 114 degrees and I took a Buck with a bow that day. When it is that hot I always brought some ice chests with me so that I can break the carcass down into primal cuts to butcher later on. A lot of guys don't come prepared and end up losing the meat because it is the hottest season. The rut in "A" Zone is normally mid-October. There are other zones open now and through November. I sat this season out with knee surgeries, gave them a break this year .

I am not sure if it is legally open here yet. I stopped by Square Deal's house yesterday, but I was afraid to ring the door bell .

I could probably get a coon or opossum real easy if this drought continues for too long. Do you think you could make that tast good?

I've had barbequed raccoon before and it actually was pretty good. I think I'd have to draw the line on opossum though, unless you're cooking. Then I'd try 1 bite.

Archery season started for us in Michigan (home of my boyhood hero, Fred Bear) Oct. 1. Kinda getting in the way of my squirrel season, and I do love small game hunting. Just been out once so far, am teaching my neice's husband to bow hunt. Sunday I had three does come by my stand.. I am not choosy, I hunt venison, not antlers-- but could not get a clear shot at the largest one. No problem, Season open until Jan 1.

Weather here? Possibility of snow mixed with rain on Friday.

An area for you fellas to contemplate. Eastern Oregon between Burns and John Day. There are some excellent tight areas in there with some muleys that might go 450 and above. Lots of sliver slingers hunt it, 20 years ago when I lived out there the success rate was quite high. It is also a good Elk Hunting area. Im sure all particulars can be answered by Oregon department of Fish and Game.

I'd love to come out west for mule deer and elk some day. For now I'm content hunting our Whitetails in Illinois.

A friend just emailed some pictures to me of a deer he harvested last Sunday in mid-Illinois... It's the biggest he has ever taken...

You have got to post the particulars when you find out. Was he measured up for P & Y. He looks like he could be in the Non Sym top few or higher.
The yardage, bow and tackle would be interesting. What kind of knife was the finish work done with. REALLY NICE BUCK!!!

No one has scored it yet. I'll make sure to post the score when I find out. The weight was 250 field dressed. He said the deer came into a doe decoy... (Ever use one of those)

I'll summarize what happened from what he told me...

The brute was meandering around at 40 yards from Rob in the early hours of the morning. It finally started headed toward his direction after a loooong wait. Rob's heart was pounding out of his chest. The deer finally got to 15 yards and offered a clean shot. Rob let the arrow fly and the deer didn't make it another 75 yards from the point of impact.

I'll have to ask what kind of knife he uses.

No deer for me yet with a bow here in Michigan. However, yesterday, with my 'expert tutoring', my neice's husband got his first deer-- a buck-- with his bow. I just go ahead and refer to the guy as my nephew. He is a good young man. He called me from his tree stand (I was 100 yards away in mine), as soon as he shot, sure that he had killed it, although it ran off. I knew there was a dead deer out there close by, 'cause I had heard the crash when the buck piled up against a tree just 40 yards from me. I enjoyed the day as much as my nephew did. More, I swear.

When I am gone, I know there is at least one replacement for me, out in the woods, hunting. Hopefully two... Last year at Christmas I got the couple's son-- age 2-- a chipmunk .22 rifle.

Yesterday was a good, good day.

Wow impressive buck.. He makes the deer in Florida look like pygmies...

I will gladly trade a wild boar hunt or Oceola turkey hunt for the chance to hunt something of that size...

Nice Whitetail! In California's "A" zone the coastal Blacktails dress out at 100 to 115 LBS, sometimes even less. I saw one guy with a dressed out buck that weighed in at 59 LBS at a butcher shop that used to be in Finley. I think he should have let that one grow up. Biggest Blacktail I ever saw (with my dad, biggest he ever saw too) we estimated him at 160 LBS dressed out. Only 70 yards away, he looked every bit the trophy he was with a tall wide 4x4 rack through the binoculars. Unfortunately my dad had talked me into carrying his old Winchester model 94 .24-35 with open sights. (made in 1895 by serial # and octogon rifle barrel). The sun was setting with only 15 minutes of shooting time left and I could not see him at all through the sights. We just let him walk away and watched through binoculars. What If? I usually carried a .30-06 with a 3x to 9x Leupold with the big 50mm lens. Oh well, we still talk about it and that was 20 years ago. Being a good sport has it's rewards, I had no chance to make a kill shot and we reminisce more about that one than the ones I have taken. That rifle is worth a lot of money now.
Anyway, nice buck, I'm glad your friend had the patience and morals to take the right shot. I don't hunt to many places in California, to many dumb hunters that can't hit the broad side of a barn.
Yep, in California folks in the city ask me how come I always use "dressed weight". Simple really, I never tried to weigh a live one!
