All About Pocket Knives

I was wanting to know if anyone had information on knives made for Sears and Roebuck. I have looked in Levine and my many knife books and found limited information. I was wondering if there are any reproduction catalogs out for Sears and Roebuck cutlery, if so where can I buy them.

Well if we get anyone who's knowlegable about Sears Knives, I've got one that I know very little about.

I assume it's made by Schrade since it's identical to an 8OT right down to the sawcut delrin handles. That's the limit of my insight however.

I also have a couple of old Sears Craftsman pocket knives, I don't know much about?

Here is a stockman stag made by Camillus pre WW 2 I think. It is tang stamped Sta Sharp S R & Co. Also I have one made by Napanoch for sears if anyone wants to see it I will try to get a picture. Click picture to inlarge.

Camillus made some for Sears & Roebuck around the years 1920 through 1940 or so, depends on the book you got.
Most all of them will be stamped HIGH CARBON STEEL on the master blade. I have seen some stamped STA-SHARP also. And I have seen some with the H.C.S. tang stamp and the blade etched STA-SHARP.
The story I heard/read said that one of the "Buyers" for S&R were friends with a Camillus seller. They were only made for Sears & Roebuck.
El Lobo had a picture of one in the 'Stockman Pattern' thread also recently IIRC.

That wood handled Craftsman stockman looks a lot like the Imperial Frontier Double Eagle series, which was made by Camillus.

Thanks Dale! for the info. The guy I got it from told me it was made by Schrade but I think he was just guessing.

Schrade actually discontinued the Frontier line, I think in the mid 1970s because they were too much in competition with the Old Timers & Uncle Henry lines. That was after Schrade & Imperial had merged. They were made for Imperial and for Schrade by Camillus. It is one of those strange things, it is a Schrade, it is an Imperial, it is a Camillus.........it is confusing.

Remember, back in those days Albert & Henry Baer owned or controlled Schrade, Imperial & Camillus, as well as other companies at various times.

On Sat. the 21st three of us local collectors went to the Arms show in Tulsa, while there I showed the old S&R Napanoch knife pictured earlier to Jim Sargent. He could not tell me any more history about S&R knives but he enjoyed seeing the knife. He said that he didn't think that he had ever seen a S&R Napanoch before. He did notice that this knife was jigged bone worm smooth. Also one of my friends found a Wilbert Cutlery Co. knife at this show made for S&R by Napanoch or Empire. If I could get enough history together I would like to write a article on S&R knives. I have E-Mailed the Sears historian but have not gotten a replay. I would need my wife or daughter to do the actual writting. If anyone has additional history let me know.

A friend of mine, Rich Langston, is quite an authority on knives from the Hudson Valley of NY. He has lived in the area for around 50 years & has quite a collection of knives from all the makers in that area. He has also written a book on old switchblades, "The Collector’s Guide to Switchblade Knives." The nice thing is that he has lived there so long that he knows people who made knives for some of the companies. He told me that in some families he knows 3 generations of cutlers in a single family. It gives him some insight a lot of people don't have.

He has quite a collection of Napanochs. If anyone would know about your knife, I am sure he would.

Here is the same knife (I think) with the Frontier stamp.

I think your 50th Anniversary is a Schrade, at least that is what it looks like from the pic. Nice knife, no matter who made it.

Here are a few that look like your anniversary knife Mitch. All 3 are marked Craftsman USA 9507 and they perfectly match a Schrade 272 peanut pattern knife I have. Nice little knives. I particularly like the white jigged delrin- you don't see many of those. The 2 twins have different shields, if you click the picture you should be able to see them better.
