All About Pocket Knives

Hi all,
I just had a look at AAPK Schrade list under "Older Schrades" found 891 and 896K - no 895.
This is my 895 one of my best Schrade knives...Ken

I think it is a great pattern, with the carbon steel blades. I like it when they put on the SCHRADE WALDEN shield like that. The 895 and 861 are both really sweet slim stockman knives.

Are they "stockmans," or "stockmen?" I know this sounds foolish, but I am serious (I won't get into moose & meese). Meanwhile, the 895s and 861s are indeed fine patterns.

Stockmen rolls of the tongue a little better. It we were talking about ranch employees it would seem stockmen would be appropriate. But perhaps knives are different. I wrote it stockmans first, then changed it. Now I have changed it to give the word knives the plural responsibility, which I am sure is correct.

This is a good question: We have an American and Australian trying to speek "The Queen's English" her.
So lets go;
The knife in question is a "Stockman"; so in English, one Stockman would be called a knife - more than one Stockman, would be "Stockman Knives"
So the Schrade Stockman is always a Stockman, the plural is in the "knives".
God bless America and Thank God we do not speek English....Ken

That is too funny!
I hate to ruin everyones fun, but Schrade did not call it a stockman.

Schrade listed it as a "Slim Premium Stock Knife."
They probably did that to avoid the whole 'stockman' vs. 'stockmen' vs. 'stockmans' controversity.

If someone has the time, it might be interesting to go throgh the Schrade catalogs and pricelists on Collectors-of-Schrades and see if Schrade even used the term "stockman." Most of the OT & UH patterns are named like "Senior", "Junior", "King Ranch", etc.

Stockmans it is. I daresay I would not expect to find consistency in the catalogs through the years. These two stockmans have each others descriptions. Consistent marketing materials and patterns was not what Schrade was good at. It makes collecting them more interesting...

I have had some fun wih this today, trust Dale to get involved. We should call them "Stock" knives.
Hi Dale old mate, I have just picked up two new lock-back knives today. A LB7 with Gold etching and a LB5 with bone handles...Ken

The 895 or 825 is for sure a great pattern.

Does the bottom one have jimping on the springs?
It sort of looks that way on the bit of open spring I can see.

Yes, the bottoms of the liners and springs are milled on the edges. I've seen a few 861's where they worked the top of the liners too, up by the blades.
