My son who turned 15 a week ago had a pretty good morning. He killed this 175lb wild hog with a 22-250 at 115 yards...

Also included in the pictures is this 11' 2" 500 lb Gator we trapped on Wednesday.

PS Oh yeah the hog was skinned using a Case trapper with Carbon blades...

You know Johnnie I hate to admit it but I need to check and see what the permits cost again, its been so long since I paid attention to the cost...This makes #30 in the last 5 weeks without really even trying very hard. We have averaged about 75-80 every year for the last couple of years. This past week has been a big gator week with 3 gators over 10' and finally this big 11 footer. This particular Alligator was really old and in fine condition, if you can see the size of his teeth it gives away a snapshot of his age, they were really big in diameter.

The gator will go to a cooler then collected and moved to a processor farther up the state where he will be skinned for all kind of uses and his meat will be sold in bulk at 1,000 lb increments to wholesalers...

so, as a resident you are allowed open harvest for personal use? profit? game management? safety concerns? i have seen gator farms where they are raised for profit.

No let me clarify myself. The Gator Trapper is licensed and has gone through the proper certification with the Florida Freshwater & Game commission. He then can legally by use of tags remove alligators from the property I manage. To be able to be licensed you have to pay certain fees and have a certain amount of education requirements completed before you are legally able to hunt gators. This is why I forget the actual cost for each tag because I don't have to worry about it.

The state does offer a quota lottery for laymen who want to trap gators during a certain time of the year in certain areas. The price of gator hides and meat is variable like anything else and happens to be up this year.

As far as a safety concern, yes it is hazardous to an extent because we are talking about large powerful animals that have the brain the size of a marble. Normally a gator is caught by a hook & line using a beef lung. Once the gator is hooked you slowly pull the animal onto the edge of the bank where you bang stick or shoot it with a rifle. As we all know life does not always go as smooth as we would like so things can happen unexpected. This particular trapper has a 3 millon dollar liability insurance policy or else we would not even attempt to remove any gators...

I just read last week where the state of Florida is considering allowing any property owner to remove a nuisance gator off their own property without using a certified trapper because of the ever increasing population of gators and "people" in Florida..

no trapping sunburst, but hunting is my passion. of course, nothing in texas would bite back like a gator. (maybe a sandbar )
