All About Pocket Knives

I haven't posted on the Schrade forum before because it's so hard to spell. Anyway, I ain't got too many old Scrhades nohow. But I got this ol' 804 I picked up somewhere along the collecting path. I think I done pretty good with this 'un; probl'y only paid $5 for it years ago. You guys think I should shine it up some???

It don't look like it's been sharpened or shined, so I recon you should do both. Mr. Jack.

I disagree with "shining it up". It took a long time to get that patina. Putting a careful edge on it is respectful, but "shining it up" is an irreversible loss of history!!

I like Charlie's line of thought, although a nice coat of mineral oil on those handles wouldn't hurt.

Thanks guys! It looks like someone may have used a crocus cloth or something on it years ago, but I will leave it as is. Mineral oil only.

I have one similar to yours, and it appears mine was polished too long ago as well. I would imagine that knife had a crocus polished master blade, and very likely to be etched, either with Everlastingly Sharp, or Carpenters Knife. If I get mine in just under the right light with a magnifying glass, I can make out that old etch. That knife is for sure a keeper Jack. Yours has beautiful handles.



Mine is a darker color, and I've often debated whether mine is bone or a composite. They switched off on handle materials on this one in the 40's and 50's.

Thawk I got one just like yours ,would like to find out more about it from some of the knife experts here at AAPK .

The 804 last appears in the Schrade Walden catalogs in 1973.
It does not appear in the 1974 Schrade catalog.
I do not recall seeing any that have just the Schrade tang stamp.
Has anyone seen one made after the Schrade Walden tang stamp?

When I posted the dates of the patterns in the AAPK Research Section I listed the first year they appeared in the catalogs as 1952. I have received some older catalogs since then and the 804 is listed in the 1950 price list.
There is an earlier reference to the pattern as a #4 in the 1947 catalog. I believe that when the 1947 catalog was printed it was shortly after Albert Baer, owner of Ulster Knife, bought Schrade Cut Co. The date of the purchase of S.C.C. varies according to which writer you read; 1946 or 1947. I suspect the buy out occurred in late 1946 or early 1947.
It appears that they were renaming the S.C.C. patterns when that catalog was printed in 1947, and so the 804 appears under the old Schrade Cut Co number of #4.
