Case Classic Toenail Value?

Hi folks,

Came across this toenail a few days ago and put it on my watch list. Can anyone tell me why the value of this knife is so High? The seller mentions its a proto but I see nothing about this knife that makes it one. He says bolster etched with proto 00 but the only thing I see is the long tail C with 00 which was quite common on Csse classics. I cannot find it as a Case Classic in the Best in the Long Haul Case Classics book.

I questioned the seller on why he was calling it Proto and he informed me that the dealer who sold him the knives years ago told thim that the 00's on the bolster indicated a prototype. I explained to him the 0 or 00 or 000 indicated basically nothing other than the original buyer did not have it specifically serial numbered. Also it is clear on the end of the box in the auction add it says one of 80 which means it is a regular production. Regular production and Prototype never coincide. I suspected he might remove the word "proto" but so far it remains.

You are correct about the bolster serial # road. From what I understand it had nothing to with prototypes and was just one of those added touches usually at the request of the buyer. I would say the 1 of 80, the double elephant etch and the buyers lack of knowledge about the 00 is what ran the price up.

There is mention of Red Bone Corn Cob jigging on page 4 of the supplement, althought it doesn't give the number produced.

Thanks Guys,

When a fellow is informed about the details of his knife and will not come clean its a shame. For the love of the mighty $. I have him on my Poo List and would but anything for free from him.

I am not sure but I think the knife may be considered hard to find. Enlarge the photo with the tin it came in. It is one that the factory recalled because of the mistake in spelling of Pennsylvania. There probably not to many out there.

I just have the one. I believe Rodger (God bless his soul) had quite a few of them.

Harrast,

Thanks for this info. So are these special additions part of the Case Classic series? I still can't find them in the book. I do know that there were many mistakes and updates to the book " Case Classics Best in the Long Haul " John Adams founder of Case Classics Club has posted a lot of new information on many of the updates but I did not see anything on these.

With what has been discussed here in these posts what is the underlying reason for the value, It seems there has been a number of diffent things disscussed.

1) Prototype?, which I do not think is correct.
2) Miss spelled PA. on the tin?
3) The fact that the tins were not approved by Case?
4) The rarity of the item in question?, which makes more sense than any other IMO.
5) Or a combination of the items above?

Thanks for the post, I'm learning everyday.... Alan

That's the "Southern" Californie spelling of Pa.

Maybe they had Dan Quail working for them as a speller. Remember his spelling of P-O-T-A-T-O-E?

Just on a side note, that CoA you posted didnt come with the knives when they were released, I have a whole set of 96's I bought on release, and not one came with that CoA.I'm not sure when that CoA came into existence.
