All About Pocket Knives

This is the latest addition to my modest Schrade collection: an 8 OT with green bone scales.
I can't say that the color appeals to me but the scales are very thick bone and the knife is virtually new but was stored poorly by the former owner. The box has a strong odor of mildew and the brass pins had a green color that fortunately rubbed off. The good news is the blades, bolsters and liners are pristine. The plastic bag it was stored in and the factory oil did its job.
The thick bone scales make this knife feel more substantial than a similar sized knife with Delrin scales. After my initial disappointment at seeing it, I've decided that it was a decent knife after all and I didn't pay a whole lot for it.

Thanks for your reply, Ken. I don't know enough about Schrades to tell when it was made or how many were made. I've carried a Buck 301 Stockman off and on for over 40 years. It was also made by Schrade and the 8 OT seems just as well made as the Buck.

Most, (99%) of my knife collection was made by Schrade - from about 1968 to 2004.
I have almost all the items and knives, made by Schrade in 2003 and 2004.
However, I do have some Buck 301 knives - pre 1973.
And I do have some of the knives made by Schrade for Buck, is your knife like one of these ?

That's a wonderful looking Schrade, Spectrum. Glad it cleaned up so well for you. You can take a paper grocery sack and put a couple of inches of fresh kitty litter in it, then place the box the knife came in, in the bag, opening the ends of the box. Roll the top of the bag shut and set it up for a month or so where it's warm and dry. That should remove the strong odor of the mildew you were talking about. Bull

The old Buck that I own is just like the top one in your 3-Buck photo. It has the same lined bolsters and no model number. All the rest of my Buck folders were probably made by Camillus.
That blue jigged scale 8 OT is a very handsome knife, I've never seen another like it. Thanks for the hint about removing the mildew odor, 268bull.

Not sure if the picture is gone now, but the 8OTG and 8OTR were from around the early 1980's, and most of the time had threaded bolsters and no shield. I've seen a few with the shield. You will also see the same knife with no shield and the SS Heritage series blades. I'm thinking yours is one with the production carbon steel 8OT. There are probably some with brown bone too. They can be found both in a brown box, or the tan Sharp Idea box.
