All About Pocket Knives

I was bidding on this knife, but got out the Counterfeiting Antique Cutlery book. It descibes how the line above the stamp should go out to the top of the blade (page 282). Please look at the pictures on eBay and compare the front of the spear blade to the back. Does the tang looked shaved as described in the book?

Thanks, I guess no one else wants to get involved until the bidding is over. Either that or it's supper time. I agree Tex somethings are just too good to be true, but I do love those handles! Problem is I would always have doubts, no doubt the reverse is different than the front, at least in the pictures. I will take your advise. Thanks again.

That's a lot of money riding on the knife right now ...... I hope it is a righteous knife for all who are bidding but something doesn't smell right in Denmark ... so to speak.
It is in excellent condition to be 70 - 90 years old ..... I'd have to hold that one in my hand BUT, from the seller's view .... I did notice he has a 7 day return policy ???

I dont think its been shaved, but agree with others.

My take on that knife is that it is authentic; however at least from the poor pics the blades look to be narrow from use/wear and heavily cleaned and polished. The main blade in particular just looks to be too narrow for a mint knife. And I can say that since I have three or four specimens of that knife in true mint condition.

I have had the same thoughts about tangs being shaved. I also have the book "Counterfeiting Antique Cutlery book" There are so many knives and descriptions in the book one can get lost. I've looked really hard at some of the counterfeits vs. authentic knife stamps in the book and have a difficult time seeing what is being described. But I do believe that some Case knife tangs are not all the way out to the top of the blade. Knifeaholic may be able to say more regarding this particular attribute.

I really do not believe that the tang has been shaved. I believe that the tang stamp is authentic as is the whole knife. The distortions that you see are due to a heavy cleaning/buffing job which resulted in a lot of metal removal. That blade does not have anywhere near the width and "belly" that a true mint 99 spear blade should have. That indicates a used sharpened knife that was cleaned.

Thanks to all who took a look and responded. The book on counterfeits knives is most definitely confusing, at least to me. I figure you saved me a lot of bucks and I know a lot of worry.

If you think that a tang (like on this knife) might have been shaved, the first question to as yourself is - why would someone have shaved the tang.

I think the term is over-used.

When you “shave” a tang you have to re-stamp it, that means heat treating. Problem two, now it’s quite a bit thinner than the backspring, the whole knife has to come apart. It seems like a lot of trouble to me, anyone that is that good would be building knives for themselves and making good money.

The main blade looks too narrow to Me.

The tang has not been shaved.

The blades fit nicely between the liners, see the overhead shot.

It has been heavily buffed. Just look at this picture of the front bolsters.

They are paper thin on the edge

My wife walked in and said "Shaved tang?????" with eyebrows raised one day last week... took me a few seconds to realize that she had read it over my shoulder.
We got a good laugh out of it.
