What would be a good metal for a fixed blade I have made one from a Old crosscut saw but how would a old circular saw blade be good for a blade

They have good steel but usually need to be retempered because more often than not they overheated while being used as a saw

How could I make a brass hand gurad or would it be easier to order one from jantz for it
