This is what happens when you're learning.

I tried to straighten this blade to fit between the liners on a practice knife, didn't work.

It was out of a 3 blader, I think I hit it too close to the blade, but the tang area might be the
same hardness because it broke across part of the tang.
I was under the impression the tang should be softer and it schould bend in that area.
Might run outta blades before I get the hang of this...

You can heat up the tang area to soften just not the blade or cutting edge.
You learn from your mistakes........
When in doubt, ask........

Another question.......
How did you go about trying to straighten the blade?
In a vise and trying to bend?
If so, the correct way is to crink the blade.

Gary, you could still try crinking that blade for practice, I'm fairly certain all of Imperial's tangs were annealed. try laying what's left of the tang on a bench and prop the blade up on something about 1/4" to 3/8" thick (I use a chunk of leather) at around the beginning of the nail mark. Give it a whack or two right around where Adrian's hitting his blade. I use one of the amber mallets to prevent marring the blade. You'll need to hit it fairly hard to get it to bend, just don't forget to wear eye protection! Ideally you're looking for it to bend just above the shoulder of the tang.

You guys should try crinking one of the big folding hunter blades some time. Have you seen the cell phone commercial where the guy's hitting the "tarantula" on the phone with his shoe? That's about how hard you have to hit the blade

Eric, I've got Adrain's book and tried to do the same, you saw the result.

Just not got the knack, I started off with a reasonable whack and progessed from there to where
I'am now. Did something wrong, but if I've got enough blades I get the hang of it.

You gotta try these things, that's how we learn.

It's only a blade, plenty on the bay!!!!
