Sometimes it is difficult to determine if a Craftsman knife is Schrade or Camillus, when the blades are Craftsman stamped.

I have two Craftsman knives but I don't know if they were made by Schrade or Camillus?

The top one may (?) have been made in their Imperial plant in R.I. (?). The middle one is a bit uncommon. I guess they all are.

I'm going to throw in a number of them here. These are some of the obvious Schrades I have in my collection. I've got many more Craftsman knives but their blade profiles and bevels are more likely to be Imperial Frontier/Ranger items, plus, of course, Ulsters and Camillus.

It might be nice to have a Craftsman forum, don't you think? (hint, hint)

Russell, those are great. The ubiquitous 8 OT in all its hats has always been a favorite of mine. Your example appears to be pre-1973 and the fit and finish appear to be typically just a little better than par, as is usual for Craftsman contract knives. Good show! I have a lot more also, but I don't know that they are worth scanning. I think very few Schrade models escaped a Craftsman contract. There were at least dozens, and maybe more than a hundred.

Thanks tongueriver! I've lots more, as I said, but had to make do with these pics for the moment. I just had the tire doctor patch several blowouts in the inguinal area so I am moving kinda slow right now.

I really want, some day, to photograph and post all of my Craftsman stuff once there is an appropriate venue for it. Like I mentioned previously, many of them are Imperial if I am guessing correctly based on the blade shapes and bevels (such as the white handled 3 5/16" and 3 7/8" jobs whose clip has a pronounced bevel on the mark side forward of the nail nick, and the rather broader and flat topped speys on the size 8 frame - they just look like Frontiers or Rangers to me).

I would have posted a 9554 but it is in poor shape compared to thawks' pristine one above! I am trying hard to get a mint one of those Craftsman whittlers!

Anyway, more later as I bounce back.

If I had to guess Mitch, I'd say the yellow jack is a Camillus. At least the master blade sure looks like it has that Camillus swedge. A lot of Ulsters looked like that too. I think some Sears knives had parts from both Schrade and Camillus.

Russell - Nice showing. You know, those whittlers showed up in a flurry a couple years ago on Ebay, and competition was tough.

I finally remembered to dig this one out . It has been in lay-away for over a year , so I guess that I can put it back out .

Bob, you might have just solved one of my Craftsman mysteries!

I wondered if my knife was a Schrade 863 or a Camillus 72. WOW, could it be Schrade? (the swedge and jigging are slightly different.)

PS: I've got whole a bunch of unknown Craftsman knives, mostly bone, that I would love to have identified as to their original maker. Should I flood the knife Q&A forum with Craftsman knives?

I keep looking at these two knives and the difference in the swedge and jigging and am now convinced that my 9494 is a Camillus 72.

I suppose I should not be surprised to know that Sears had multiple suppliers for a single model over a period of time, rather than a sole source.

Here's an older Craftsman, model # 9470. Some previous owner has seriously abused the knife blades on a grinder , so this will go to my next antique fair coming up in the next couple of weeks. I,m going to make a display which will be designated, tackle box knives. Aside from the obvious overwork on the blades, the stockman has good snap on all 3 blades. The pickup price was good though, and it still has a lot of work left in it. It can live out the rest of it's life in somebody's working pocket or a tackle box. Bull

I believe this to be a schrade I love the blades.

I don’t think that front knife was made in the Schrade factory-

1- The shape of the drop point blade, it doesn’t look like a Schrade blade to me.

2- The clip blade looks wider proportionally than a Schrade blade.

3- Placement of the nail nicks.
Both are farther forward than Schrade tends to place their nail nicks.
Compare the nail nick on your knife to a Schrade 25OT or 125OT; the nail nick on the Schrades is under the knuckle on the clip, yours is well forward of it.

I am reasonably sure the knife in front was made by Imperial.
It looks to me like the Imperial Frontier #4625.

However, you are not too far off as the Frontier series were made in 3 different factories; Camillus made some patterns, Imperial made some in Providence, and Schrade made some of the slip joints. Keep in mind that Albert Baer Owned Camillus, Schrade and a chunk of Imperial, and then in 1984 he purchased the remaining stock of Imperial and became the sole owner of all three companies.

I think your knife was made at the Imperial factory in Providence RI.

Here is one I just picked up. A 897 pattern, kinda of different.
