All About Pocket Knives

In keeping with your request for displays, here are two Schrade Walden Trappers that must date back to the 50s or early 60s. I was hunting with the used knife when I was in or just out of High School (1955), the other is new (never sharpened nor carried). The one I used skinned many deer in California, Idaho, and Nevada, and holds an edge better than any knife I have ever owned!

I forgot to mention, both knifes are 293s, and are stamped "Schrade Walden N.Y. U.S.A.

Very nice trappers Old Bill. You have taken great care of them. Those Schrade Walden NY USA knives did sport some nice steel in those days. They changed the handle material from jigged bone to composite plastic (settling on Delrin around 1960 or so) and the ones you show there, with that jigging style, could be found with either handles.

Here is one that I don't know how to age - obviously an Old Timer, but the name in the shield on the handle is the only marking of any type on the knife (no model number, no brand or USA stamp, etc.). My Dad rediscovered this knife in an old tackle box of his a few years ago and gave it to me (along with a Buck bird gutting pocket knife); he said his Father-in-law, my Granddad, had given it to him one day when he needed a pocket knife, but didn't have one - my Granddad pulled it out of his pocket, gave it to my Dad and told him to keep it. My Granddad died in 1977, but my Dad has no recollection of how long he has had the knife, except that it wasn't new when he received it. It is 3-1/4" long (closed) and I think it must be a 34OT. (edited typo on length).

Old Hunter, It appears you have a 58OT. It probably has (or had) the Ulster name on it.
It should be 3-1/4” closed, the only Old Timer that length. They were thought to be made by Ulster, but in reality they were made, at least in part, by Schrade. Both Schrade & Ulster were part of Imperial Knife Associated Companies. They were a giveaway promotion for Prince Albert tobacco along with 2 other patterns.

Hal, you are correct the steel in the Schrade Walden knives seems to be different than the newer Schrade knives, even when comparing carbon steel to carbon steel.
The steel just “feels different” to me when I cut something with it. It is difficult to explain, but does anyone understand what I mean?

This 834Y is a new knife to me. Gringo sent it to me this week along with 4 other Schrades, a 3OT, 8OT, 34OT and a 77OT. He thought I might enjoy playing with them. (Is the bear catholic?) One will likely be used for parts but the others will likely end up as projects, except for this little honey, the 834Y. Aside from some rust it is in far better condition than the other 834Y I had, so I cleaned off the rust, put the blade in my strop and immediately fell into “True Knife Love!” This steel ‘feels sharper’ and cuts cleaner than most of the newer Schrades I have.
Does anyone have an explanation for this phenomenon?

They were made from 1986-2004.

it was a pleasure to send those off to you dale.
cut my work load by 5...

nothing like old carbon blades.

an update:
dale said he sent me five penny's for those knives ...how cool right...so here on sunday, {not being a person who goes in a crowded post office on saturday}, here arrives a package...rather heavy for a few penny's...i open it and here dale sent me an ulster camp knife he modified...

the bone scales on this knife look like melted butter...just sweet...
