How do you determine what to pay for a knife? I'm having a hard time on ebay because I'm scared to go too high haha.

Also, what would be a good price for the Tennessee and Kentucky whittler 2 knife set in the box?

Yeah man, it's all about what's the most you'll pay. Insert that amount as your bid. If it goes over......oh well. If it goes under what you bid, then you're the winner at that price!!

Hi from Australia,

Determining what you should pay for an item is not hard.
1. Find the price the item you’re looking for has sold for before, say on eBay or such.
2. If the item sells for; let’s say $100 that is a good indication of the price you will have to pay.
3. If that item is on eBay and four or five bidders bid it up to $60, you are dreaming if you think it will be yours if you bid $61.
4. If you bid $110 you may own it, from $61 up to your Max. bid of $110.
5. If you think you will never have a chance to find another one; bid $150 - it could be yours for $111.
6. Always remember, Santa Claus only comes once a year and luck comes alone less. Ken

I use the Completed Items feature on eBay and combine that with how much the knife means to me, how much money I have available, and how often that particular knife model comes up for auction.

BTW, when you first start out collecting knives, $50 seems like a lot of money. Five years later, and $500 seems like a lot of money.

After 10-15 years of accumulating, I didn't know I was collecting until I started hanging around on AAPK.

I've broken the $100 mark a couple of times but it's still a lot of money to me. I'm still cruising eBay trying to snipe the $2.00 specials.

I too struggled with this issue (and still do). Most of the time my knives have been purchased using emotion and the "by guess and by golly" method. I think Bob W. pretty much hit the nail on the head for the 80% who are not experts at this.

Those are the best kind and the sweetest deals, imo!!!
I still get a huge kick of picking up a unique piece for a low price because it flew under the radar!

What a knife is worth depends on if it is the first one you buy in a set or the last one you need to complete a set.
