All About Pocket Knives

I got this great old Schrade Cut Co. today from Scott TripleF....love it! It is my first Cut Co. stamp, alot of blade loss but other than that the knife is in great shape, with solid half stops on both blades, and strong snap on both as well. Wood handles are in real nice shape too. Cleaned them up with some Murphy's oil, polished up the steel parts with some Brasso, lubed it up a tad with some Slick 50 one shot, and she's good to go. Tang stamp dates it from 1917-1946, anyone have any other info they would like to share about this knife I would love to hear it. Thanks much Scott, this ol' Schrade has found a happy new home.

After spending some time with it today, I think I'm going to carry it for a few days here so I can show it off a little. Quality made knife to hold up so well to what was obviously some serious work...

Nice old knife Mike, lot of history in older ones.
I can sit and ponder over them for hours, wondering what
sort of life they've had.

Thanks Gary, I agree with you regarding the history of old well used knives. Something about the wood handles, it almost seems like they absorb more of their surroundings than bone or synthetic materials. Growing up my mom collected antiques, mainly farm related stuff, and most all of it was wood, so wood handles on cutlery really stir up nostalgic feelings for me.

Schrade Cut Co really did a nice job on those old shields.
The edges are clean, almost as if they were machined instead of stamped.
I like the shape of their shields and the inletting is very percise and clean, especially in the celluloid handles, like these two.
They have an elegance not found in many of the later knives, IMHO.

Those are a couple of real beauties Dale! Any way to narrow down the date a bit more specificaly than 1917-1946?

I have spent most of my time studying Schrade Walden (1946-1973) and Schrade (1973-2004). I don’t know as much about the Schrade Cut Co knives, but I would guesstimate them be 1930s to 1940s based on the style and materials used.

I know there several members more familiar with the Schrade Cut Co knives than I am.
Perhaps one of them can date them precisely.

One thing we usually don't think of: Almost all patterns stopped dead in their tracks for the duration of WWII. Read the great article in December Knife World.

Didn't G. Schrade patent some shield inletting machine or process?
