Like today for instance.I got the opportunity to hold my great grandson for the first time since he was born about a month ago.
He has been in the hospital since he was a week old after the doctors discovered his lungs were filling with fluid and he had a hole(actually two)in his heart.
He was operated on when he was 12 days old and after being on a heart bypass machine(so the repairs could heal)his lungs collapsed and he had to be returned to the ventilator and oxygen.
Fortunately he responded well to the treatment and Thursday he came home with his somewhat exhausted mother who probably hasn't slept a day since he was born.
My wife and I went over to see him tonight and she got to feed him.He wolfed down his formula and promptly started to doze.He spent the next hour and a half sleeping in my arms smiling and making the little noises babies often do.Brought back a TON of good memories.

Ray, if he can survive all that during his first month of life, he's going to be a tough little Knife-Knut. I wish you and the little fella all the best life has to offer. I hope you both last long enough to get to know each other.

Having spent nineteen years involved in pediatric cardiac surgery, I know everything that could have occurred that would have resulted in an outcome much different than what you've described.

Watching babies die was one of the main things that drove me out of academic cardiac surgery in 1991.

You all have no idea how great a miracle this little guy and his family have experienced.
