All About Pocket Knives

I just received this knife in. Classic example of cell out-gassing...









I was just wondering about the tang stamp, and then I went back to check on the clear handle knife thread. Funny coincidence, "Just Bob" posted about one similar to this.

So, it's a Novelty Cutlery Co., out of Canton. It seems like a pretty well made knife, and aside from the obvious cell damage, it's in decent shape. And with a swell center and split back springs, I just have to do something with it.

So that brings me to my question. What do you think would look good on this for handles?

Glenn it's hard to tell for sure from here, but it looks like the outgassing is limited to one side only. Is that correct ?
If so, I'd suggest replacing only the offending handle and using some sort of black acrylic to replace the damaged handle slab. That is, of course assuming that the damage is limited for now to the handle and the rest of the knife is intact.

It looks like the opposite side is in tact. It'd be nice to keep that on. Ya never know. But looking at how bad the front went, I don't know...

Based on out-gassed knives I have worked on, I expect there is damage on the other side, just not as extensive, & that is a good thing.
I would not trust the other side to be stable, I would replace both handles.

Clear acrylic and personalize it with a couple of pics of your wife, kids, grandkids, favorite pet, etc...

In the end, I chose ebony! Dale made a generous offer to send me some to work with. Thanks Dale!

Okay, I finally finished this one. Here's some pics...

This was kinda cool, when I took the knife apart, somebody had wrote this on the back of one of the scales.



Parts cleaned and that great ebony from Dale glued up.


Ready for hafting.

I didn't do that much to the blades. Also, a simple bar shield would have probably set things off right, but not a bad save.

I'm going to give it some pocket time, and see how it works.

Beautiful job Glenn!! I dare say that's the finest work you've done!

Here's a little tip: if you've got some kind of long pin stock or maybe some ross pins that are the same diameter as the bolster holes, you can thread those scales together and haft and finish the front edge of the covers (the top part where the blades drop in) down to the scales before you put the knife together. Makes it a lot easier since the blades aren't in the way. If you've got a center scale or a tapered scale such as yours, you'd want to include that so that if you hit the bolster area you'll take an equal amount off each piece.

PS- when you're done, check for burrs on the scales (liners) and knock them down with the buffer before assembly so that you don't scratch the blades when you open and close the knife.

Eric, I hadn't thought of the tip you mentioned, but that makes alot of sense. I'll have to give that a try.

Ya know, I used to be intimidated by the thought of taking a slipjoint apart, now it's fun!
