All About Pocket Knives

I recently picked up this sweet old Colonial Lockback, 4 1/4" closed, 3 inch clip blade, nice big bolsters and rock solid lockup. Blade sharpened up nicely as well. Can anyone tell me any info on that style of lockback, with the button on the back of the blade as opposed to the mechanism being flush with the back? Does this style pre-date the Buck 110 style lockback? This is the only one of this style that I own, so I am just trying to learn some history behind it. When did Colonial start making this style lockback? Does anyone else have any they can share a pic of? I saw a couple others on ebay but they didn't have the bolsters....Also the knife appears to me to have an odd arrangement of pins, I'm assuming that is due to the unique locking mechanism?

...If you click the pic for a closeup the tang stamp even says Colonial Lockback, kinda cool.

First one I've seen with bolsters.Here's a couple of pics of mine w/o bolsters.

Wow that is bright yellow! Have you seen any other colors...?

Mike, that's the first Colonial I have seen with ANYTHING stamped under it besides Prov.
Does your knife have the same rivet type pins as k7k's knife?

I have one disassembled to make a blueprint from it.
I like the "old school" type lock on them!

Mine is a Sears contract knife. I think it says
High Carbon Steel
Made In U.S.A.
It's the same as k7k's except it is a plastic bone color.

Nope, if you look closely at the pics of mine, you can see that the pins are completely different...mine has an odd configuration of pins acutally , totalling 4. I would love to see a pic or two of the insides of yours while you have it apart! Are you just making a blueprint for future reference..? Are you aware of any old Colonial catalogs that list these knives?

Here ya go, Mike. This one will go back together with different handles on it.
I never thought of putting a bolster on it - but now that I've seen yours....

I'll make a print so I can build one with a few refinements.
This is pretty close to a shell handle design. The pins for the lock rocker & spring are covered by the molded plastic handles.
The frame is the same as yours. You can see all the pins inside.

Some Colonial research is being done by an outgoing, prominent AAPK member as we speak. Let's keep our fingers
crossed and we MIGHT just end up with some catalogs!!

Hey Joe, thanks for taking that pic and posting it, very cool! That satisfies my curiosity about the inner workings of that particular knife....What kind of handles are you going to put on there? Be sure to post another pic when you get 'er done! And yes, I too am looking forward to Scott's Colonial research results, to see some catalogs would be very cool indeed. I do not own the Goins book, do they have any in depth info on Colonial I wonder?......
