Hi. I was wondering if any of you Schrade guys could tell me anything about this knife. Its a splitback 3-blade whittler with stag handles. It has 2 easy open notches(?) on the shield side and 1 notch on the back side. The clip blade is tang stamped "Schrade Cut Co Walden NY". I am sorry if I posted this in the wrong section and feel free to move it if I did. I just figured all of the Schrade experts hung out over here in knife lore so I would post it here. Thanks in advance for any knowledge you can share with me.

I'll keep an eye open. That is a purty knife. someone used it hard, but took care of it. A knife like that has character.

Nice piece, Butch...
What is the exact closed length on that knife?
I am looking through the famous "Catalog E" and can't find an exact match. The ones I am seeing either have a file for one of the blades, or a different blade placement.

Hi Glenn. Thanks for your help. The closed length of the knife is 3 1/4". I bought a small collection of knives (mostly German made slipjoints which is what I collect) and this knife, along with an old Remington that I posted in the Q&A section of this forum, were included in the lot and I have absolutely no knowledge of either one. Once again thank you all for sharing any knowledge you have with me.

Butch,
I am not having luck on this one. Nothing is going together. The bone doesn't look "schrade" to me, for starters. I can't find any patterns in that config, unless that small blade facing front is a file blade. And the long pull is really making me scratch my noggin.
I hate to admit defeat, but I am drawing a blank on this one. Perhaps Rich has one in his hoard, or has seen one.
Sorry...

Not each and every model of knife was featured in every catalogue and in fact some never were. I am not goin to fight with that antique glass display case again this week to look for an exact one. Last time I almost dropped it and did drop several knives. However lets see what we can figure out first I feel the knife is either 3,1/8" or 3/ 5'16". Not 3,1/4" . That being said the knife appears to have a clip blade with a long pull nail niche. Now here are some things to consider according to the Schrade system clip blades often ( nothing is always with schrade ) were denoted with the 3/4 at the end of the model. Do not worry to much about a nail file or a pen blade since often slight variations like a clip versus a spear would also include a file versus a pen and only be a minor model change.. I feel your knife is 3,1/8" if so it would fit the pic of a 8143B if you added 8143 3/4B . That shield is usually earlier than the oval. as was that type of clip. They pic of the 8423 3/4MB ( B in stag ) is similar to yours except for the later oval shield later nail niche and file. the 8786B ( 8783B in stag ) is similar and the same rules would apply except it is 3,5/16. I also feel your knife is 3,1/8" since this version shows the cuts for opening. However the pic of the larger version is of a cell the stag may well have had the cuts. I hope this is not to confusing and at least hope it will allow you to cogitate on the points I mention and perhapes have a better understanding when evaluating these types of enigmas in the future. Often the actual pic is not there and it is like a puzzle unfortunately Schrade did not always follow its own rules so it makes it a bit tougher. Please let me know the size ( again on the knife ). Mine is only an opinion and as always it is only he who offers an opinion that ever needs to be corrected. The first number of the knife should definitely be an 8 the last a 3 there should be 3/4 before the last designation of B.
Nothing like a simple explanation. LT PS Genuine stag is not the same as stagged or jigged bone. Especially on the early knives. This makes it look unusual ( different) when comparing to Shrades cuts more available.
