John Rice Irwin, founder of the Museum of Appalachia, authored a wonderful book in the mid 80's about the life of Alex Stewart. It is entitled "Portrait of a Pioneer."

Nice, Don. Very interesting to see him make a barrel, old school.

redrider, "old school" he was ... Alex was born in 1891 and passed away in 1985 ... He was an endearing man, that grew up in an impoverished region of Hancock County TN, isolated on top of Newman's Ridge. His cooper talents are but one of the many trades he mastered ... a true American Pioneer. An exceptional read, the book is basically in 'question and answer' format, as Mr. Irwin tape recorded his meetings with Alex over a period of years.

I read that book on Stewart that you suggested some time back and enjoyed the video. My kind of stuff.
Alex Stewart was quite a guy.
Thanks Don.
