All About Pocket Knives

This stamp is on a pearl shadow congress. Anyone have any info on this brand?

The only thing I've been able to find was a mention of U.S. Cutlery Co. out of Belleville, NJ circa 1929 in Price & Zalesky's 15th Edition. I don't have Goins' book though. Hope this helps.

I have 2 listings for that tang stamp; first one being listed for Terre Haute, In. as a trademark ; second one states, Vulcan as the trademark, location St. Louis Missouri, type of firm, wholesaler, circa 1900, $ value as mid-range. The first listing, from Terre Haute, also assigns a mid-range $ value. This info came from the 7th edition of Blades guide to knives & their values. Bull

Your knife was most likely made by the company in St. Louis. It looks to me like there is a faint "V" right under the "E" in "MADE" and the "I" in "IN", though I may just be seeing things. Also I've yet to see a pocket knife by the Belleville, NJ company. They dealt mainly in kitchen cutlery and those knives I've seen have been clearly marked "BELLEVILLE, NJ".

I realize that the question is about the tang stamp, but before you generalize about the origin of a knife you have to look at the overall knife first. If the design, material, construction are indicative of a turn of the century knife or there are abouts you can then see if the tang stamp confirms that, if it doesn't have those features you then eliminate those earlier renditions and advance the construction clock. In this case I can't see the entire knife but from the photo it appears to not be an earlier knife.

Just trying to teach novices who might read this thread what you old timers are thinking when reviewing a knife.
