All About Pocket Knives

Let's hear from ya! I know I'll be out and about this weekend trying to get some of those little gray rockets, pretty sure OH will be too (just guessing there). What about the rest of y'all?

How are things looking in your area. There's a few here, but we've been having September weather in August. I'm afraid some of them have moved out. Also, it's been awful dry and the corn didn't do worth a dime. Much of its already been cut for silage so the doves we do have are pretty spread out. What about y'all?

What's your favorite dove gun?

I got an email this moring notifying me of a hunt on a nearby farm scheduled for this coming Saturday. I guess I'll give it a whril.
As far as favorite dove gun...........I've got a Fox double barell (side by side) 12 ga. that I'm planning on taking to the field. Modified and full chokes. I'm not sure it matters much what I shoot, I can't hit those little grey blurs worth a hoot with any shotgun I own.

We have plenty of dove, had good weather, got my favorite gun and load ready to go for this Saturday's hunt, BUT - my daughter has just moved to DC/College Park MD area from Dayton OH and is coming home for the long weekend and bringing a Slovak exchange student with her - guess I will be going hunting on the FOLLOWING weekend! Don't mind, wouldn't miss having my daughter home for a few days just to go hunt. Here is last years opening day birds with my favorite dove gun - a 16 gauge Belgian A-5 and a picture of the same birds getting ready to be cooked up a few days later (and a final one after most of the eating was done).

Rem 1100 12ga for me this year, can't wait! The doves are thick here but the crops are poor, very dry. I'll try to watering holes in the morning and midday and pass shoot them along their roosting routes in the evening

Going to Georgia Dome Saturday for the opening Clemson/Auburn football game !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Go Tigers !!!!! __will be the 14th of Sept.(Wednesday) before I get to the dove field__we have one hunt per month on Wednesdays till the first of the year___ 12 ga. Browning Citori,going with me first hunt ( like Phil,I can't seem to hit em' with a "'CANNON"" ??? ___________good luck to all !!!!

OH, I never get tired of seeing those poly-choked guns of yours. I like me a poly choke. I'll most likely take one of my Ithaca model 37 20 gauges, maybe the 12 gauge too with the 30 in full in case they're flying way out there. What about that 16 gauge model 12 of yours with the poly-choke? Does it see dove action?

I did finally join the Browning A5 club this year with a light twelve choked imp cyl that i traded for, hmmmm. I might have to take it instead.

Sounds good cutty! My daddy's an 870 man from way back. Great guns, they just don't fit my giraff neck worth a dime, or I'd use one too.

There's something about rackin that 870 it just adds to the fun for me. Kinda like a slip joint verses an AO tactical. I like 'em both but

I had the M12 out a couple of years ago when I took my Dad to a dove hunt at a local plantation/lodge. Truth is I shoot winged game much better with an A-5 and rabbits much better with the Winchester - guess I have become a specialist!

Conservation put out a couple of milo plots on Corp land this year. With the drought, they're kinda puny, but there are a LOT of doves this year. I'll be out opening day with my 20ga. Mossberg 500C w/modified choke. It's not a Remington or Browning, but it will take down doves as fast as you can jack in the next shell. A good friend of mines brother did the carving and painting on the stock.

Muskrat, I like them 1100's. I've got a LT good guns and they do shoot sweet.

WB, I hunted with a Mossberg 500 for a lot of years. It was one tough gun. I've seen them used hard and beat to death, but I don't think I've ever seen one worn out. They just keep going. The 20 gauge that I had, had screw in chokes and the imp cyl threw some of the best patterns of any gun I've ever patterned.

They are tough. For small game birds, this has been my go to gun for almost 30 years. It's even brought down a few pheasant, ducks and a couple of snow geese as well. Just a good all around gun for smaller game.

Well.....as long as ya eat them and don't shoot them just for sport. I guess it's o. k.

Dove, pheasant, quail, ptarmigan, grouse, partridges, turkeys, chukker, ducks, geese, I've never run into anyone who shoots them just for sport and leaves them lying in the field. Anybody here ever run into someone that irresponsible??

That's one of the reasons that I quit hunting. Before my wife's father died, we'd either be hunting or fishing every week-end, he liked wild game and I didn't, so he would take all, clean it and eat it. When he passed I gave it all up since I won't kill an animal just for the sake of killing it.

Besides there being no place for me to hunt around here, I don't like the taste of wild game. I'm with T.J. I'm not against hunting but for me, there's no point in killing game if you're not going to eat it.

Now varmints are another story.

Mea culpa on the "for sport" comment. I have nothing against hunting per se, but only for food and reasons of maintaining a healthy wildlife population.

I target shoot my 1911 all the time but choose not to carry it. Makes my azz look fat.

I have several friends that hunt, but don't like to eat what they shoot. Most give the game to older folks that can't get out to hunt anymore, but like the meat. We also give excess game to those that are a bit down on their luck. No shortage of that these days.
I would have zero tolerance for anybody shooting game just for the thrill of the kill and leaving the meat to rot! Heck, I beat myself up whenever I know i've hit something and can't track it down. It's one of the worst feelings ever!

I love the sport of hunting and everything associated with it and I'll never make an apology for hunting and why I do it to anyone - regardless of their sensibilities. Retrieving, cleaning, caring for, and preparing the game you took for the table (yours or someone else's) is an integral part of sport hunting (look at my pictures - dove from last years opening day - tastes just like dark meat chicken!). In fact it is a violation of the law (in NC and elsewhere) to abandon wild game that you have shot; the hunter must make a good faith effort to retrieve all game shot - if you ever see someone shoot and abandon wild game you simply call your state wildlife agency and report it.

O.H. you ever try rolling those dove breasts in flour and frying them ?
