Guys,
I had a friend bring me a LB7 Schrade...worn out but he wanted it fixed. The blade needed a new hinge pin. I put one in and the problem was fixed.

He brought it back the other day, hasn't even used it long enough to need it resharpened, and the stainless pin is worn in the middle again? The knife hasn't been beaten on the spine or anything, just the pin is worn out.

There doesn't seem to be any burrs in the pivot hole but I'm going to take it home to the home shop this weekend and lap it a little to make sure. I'll replace again with stainless, I just can't figure out what would've caused it to wear out that fast....

Any suggestions? I've never had a pin replacement do this before...at least not that fast or without some type of force being the cause.

sounds like its been hit or something, not normal for a new pin to wear that fast, check the tang hole for burrs.

If there aren't any burrs, either you grabbed an aluminum pin by mistake (just joking), or like Kaleb said, blunt force trauma. It could've been stepped on to apply extra pressure. You just never know. Maybe he loaned it for a minute. Redrill your holes and refit the pins. If the blade hole is clear and slightly oversized, it should work like a charm. Do you know what grade of stainless your pins are? Are they magnetic? 300 grade stainless is non-magnetic and softer than the 400 grades which are magnetic (ferrous) and stronger. See if any of this helps or let us know what you found. I'm with you in that I've never seen one wear out that quick. Share the answer when you find it please. Thanks!

I'm not sure but I think the stainless is 300 series I have....been 10-12 years since I bought it and I hardly ever use it so....

Closer examination after the original post looks like there has been pressure of some sort put to the blade. Definitely not been hit with anything, but I'm thinking the knife was stuck in something and then a lot of down pressure was applied to the lock bar. The front face of the lock has a slight bulge in it where the lockup occurs. Could've been like Elvis said and it had a boot pushing it.

Either way, I believe I found the culprit. Now if I would've just remembered to grab it when I came home so I could get it fixed! I'd forget my head sometimes if it wasn't screwed onto my shoulders.

It almost sounds like someone was batoning with it...

A board laid on top of the knife would eliminate hammer marks too. Just because there weren't any marks on the blade or frame, there's still a lot of ways to abuse a good knife.

That a lot to abuse a pin that big!!

Dredged up this older post to pick some ones brain. I have a LB7 and it either has a broken or missing spring that holds the LB lever in place. What kind of mechanism am I going to encounter? It is a 3 pin and the handle, opposite the tang stamp, has worked up about 1/32". I can't see any evidence of an attempt to open the frame up but surmise it will have to came apart. HELP
