All About Pocket Knives

Local mom and pop hardware store still has a pretty good selection of Scharde USA knives for sale. I don't know much about Schrade really, in terms of what is desirable. These are mostly small pin knives and stockmen patterns like the 340T as far as I can tell. One is a trapper, I think with what appears to be stag scales. Dang place is poorly lit!

Prices are from $12 bucks to about $30. Some suggestions and guidelines for what to look for, and/or buy, would be appreciated. Be kind, boys, I am pretty new at this!

This is the only Schrade I know anything about. It has been living in my pocket for 30 years or so!

First you should determine the extent of what they have. Then do they have a display and if so what kind. A pic would determine this. If you have a really old display pre 72 the knives will be marked Schrade Walden later would be schrade. Usually these knives were often offered with a percentage discount by small retailers ( it was built into the price ). If it display and knives are pre 72 and you can get the items for the price on the original display ( congratulations ) you have located the lost dutchman gold mine ). However chance are your display would be from the 80 or 90 tys if it is a floor model. again without out seeing it is a crapshoot. If no display all are new in boxes personally I would offer a percentage of the retail and buy them all. Chances are your stag is staglon ( schrades name for delrin imi stag.). Some models are rare most are not also premium prices seem to vary upon market whim an LB-1 two years ago was selling for 125 then they dropped to 25 now I do not know. Again they aint making no more so it all depends if you want to collect to save or speculate.

It is there dedication to the greatest exercise of human endeaver ever conceived( The United States of America ) that has and continues to make our country a monument to the aspirations of human freedom for all mankind. my most cherished possession is my citizenship my greatest love is for my country and the rights that are afforded me by the brave souls who have and still place themselves in harms way to protect those rights and freedoms. I for one could never forget them. LT PS here is a pic I thought appriopriate considering your name and your last comment to remember the military. The claws are from a Kodiak that a friend of mine found frozen in the woods apparently he was a bit to small for the other guy who liked the same girl. My buddy said it was a young bear it would have only been about 7 foot standing up. He took the claws and sent them to me as a thankyou for some knives I sent him for his five daughters. He runs a cannery. The medal is a George Washington comemerative peace type medal solid silver only about a 100+ years old.

Not the Lost Dutchman, I am sure! I suspect these are, as you say, from the 80 or 90s. The display is a small floor or countertop display about 2-3 feet square. It has the usual shapes that the knives are placed in to show model, number of blades and type. Not all patterns are present, and some spaces are empty. I will go back and give it a closer look.

I appreciate your affirmation and comments. Far too many folks take for granted the sacrifices made by so many in the past and in the present. Freedom is not free - it always comes with a heavy price.

Thanks for the pic of the Grizzly claws and medal! Great story and a fine piece you have there! I spent 25 years in the Alaska bush country, and always managed to stay out of the way of the big bears!

Yes Dale it is a bolo I had a buddy of mine make the claw holders he is a jeweler and can also do some amazing knife repairs rebuilding handles even lasering blades on broken ones and autos repair. If anyone ever needs that kind of work let me know. My feeling is that a restored knife is a saved piece of history. It is only dealers who do not explain what has been done to a knife when trying to sell it that I object to. The bolo also has elk ivory teeth. Some folks to not know that elk ivory is legal to harvest and to sell. I included some pics of two rings I have with elks teeth. the small one I won in a poker game at my gun club from a fellow on vacation from wyoming. He was short on cash and since we had been talking about elk ivory explained the ring to me and asked if he could put it up against the raise. He said I would have to trust him if he lost till he went back home and mailed it to me. He was good to his word. His sister sent it to me a few weeks later, she wrote that it was. one of his last requests before he died. Seems he had cancer and was only back east tying up a few loose ends before he cashed in. I kind of think he wanted me to win the pot anyway there it is. Oh yes according to him it was made by a local indian. The big garish ring in perfectly bad taste, giant silver nugget ring with all the elks teeth was made by my Jeweler buddy upon my request and in payment of some deal or bet we made I forget. I truly admire big gaudy jewelery and he said he would make me the biggest in bad taste ring anyone ever had. I love it. Just under 8 ounces of solid silver and elk ivory. I had gotten the teeth over the years whenever I could find them all over the country. The stained ones are the most sought after. So I used a trick that an old friend of mine had told me about years ago. You take the teeth and leave them in tobacco and snuff spit ( like from a spittoon and over the years they will darken) This was no problem since in those days I used to use both forms of tobacco, in nature this coloration happens when elk eat grass and such ( elk do not brush there teeth) as the elk get older the teeth stain naturally. In the summer you dump them out and leave them in the sun because they tend to soften in the juice over the winter when they dry you do it all over again for 4 or five years. ( You do have to be careful that you do not confuse the spitton juice bottle with your whiskey bottle and if you do do not swallow the teeth they are the devil to find after they pass through your system) ( however it does not hurt the stain) That is my delicate hand in the pic the ring is so large I have to wear it over my large middle finger and overlap on to the fingers on the side are needed to support it. I also included ( for knife content ) since I seem to be concentrating on large stuff a new display for the 858 Lumberjack and IXL stockman. These are the two largest stockmen style knives Schrade ever made. LT

I must say LT................My favorite of all those pics.........................is the display with the 858 & I*LX stockman.
But I have never been much on jewelry, but I will have several knives in different pockets most of the time.

I put the bolo pic on since you inquired. However as long as there was something in the pics you liked I guess I did OK. ownership of Knives , guns , jewelery, or beer as with most possessions is fleeting we really never own anything but are rather owned by the world around us and are simply caretakers of other little bits of that world most which will last much longer than ourselves. As was said by a better man than I "the world will little note or long remember" in this case, any of us. As you know that was said by Lincoln. Who by the way it has been discovered was of jewish heritage. The final proof of this was that he was shot in the temple. It is good none of you can reach through the computer to grab my throat after that joke. LT PS I guess I better dig out some knives to put on pretty soon.
