Dumb automotive question

I need some red heater hose. Haven't had to buy any since the last time I was home, and then I just went to a buddy and asked for some "red heater hose". Tomorrow I'm going to have to go to a parts store to buy some--what do I ask for? I don't need it to fit anything, I'm going to use it to train retrieves with my dogs.

Thanks,
Jim

Hi Jim,

You got it right - just ask for red heater hose. Regular heater hose is black....the red stuff is heavy duty. If I remember right, it usually comes in 1/2", 5/8", or 3/4" dia.

I use to work in an Auto Parts store in High School......a looonnnnggg time ago. We kept rolls of it under the counter, and would cut off whatever length the customer asked for.

One of the funny things we did when someone came in looking for parts....we would ask them:

1. What make?
2. What model?
3. What year?
4. What size engine?
5. What color?

....they would always tell us the color of their car without even blinking.

I always liked asking the new kid ( fresh out of high school auto shop) for a water pump for a 73 Volkswagon Beetle. ::shrug::

Thanks Unk. I hit 3 stores this AM, none had the red stuff. I picked up a piece of black hose to see how the dogs like it, but I'll try a few more stores this afternoon.

I don't know if the dogs can see colors, but I have trouble with it too. The red hose is a little harder, so they bite differently--which gives them a little less tendency to try to play tug with the hose.

I did find some this afternoon; NAPA had it, when I found the right NAPA. It seems to have gone up in price since the day when I traded a 12-pack of beer for a 50' roll!

I don't know if they can see colors either but my son's Jack Russell watches TV and when any animals(especially dogs come on the screen he jumps down off my lap and goes over to the set and gets up on his hind legs looking at the screen. If the dogs bark or someone knocks on a door he goes nuts.Once you tell him,"TV!" he stops.

As for prices going up on auto parts;I priced out a battery for my wife's 72 T-Bird last month. The last one I bought was about $46; it is now $115! And forget about a 6 year warranty;you might get 24 months if you're lucky.
