All About Pocket Knives

I sold my stereo equipment today. I hadn't use it in over six years so I took it down to a local place that specializes in this kind of thing and took his cash.

What he got:
1973 Pioneer TX7500 Tuner
1973 Technics SL-1300 Direct Drive Turntable
Late '80s Denon PRC-1200 Pre-Amp
Mid '90s Onkyo M-504 Power Amp - 150 watts RMS per channel (weighs a bloody ton)

What I got:
That's part of what makes it so sad.

That kinda sucks. You never get out of it what you put into it. I bet that stuff cost a few bucks back in the day.

I remember when I bought my Technics system 20 some odd years ago. I had to put it on layaway at the BX, cause I was a lowly airman with not 2 nickels to rub together. I loved that set. Don't have the huge speakers anymore, but I have all the other components still.

jerry, thats the price we pay, or in your case, the price you get, for moving on in life...
i haven't used my early 80's technics rack system in probably 10 yrs. still in very fine working condition. i have probably 400 60's and 70's folk and light and early rock albums. they all have sentimental value to me, but i would still sell em if someone made me an offer. but i doubt i will ever get anything that will make me part with it.
the family room where it is located is 16 x 32 ft. and i have it set up with surround sound. only thing is, i barely use that room anymore. i delegated myself to my workshop/mancave barn out back, and i have that equipt with a newer system with surround sound cd's and, hard to recieve, local stations....................

Difficult to do, always but don't lose heart Jerry, something better is on it's way.

Even sadder, we had a garage sale this past Summer. I agreed to put my old stereo equipment out for it.

I bought a Sansui 5000A and an Ampex casette recorder/player from a PX catalog while I was at A-341 Bu Dop in 1969 and 70. They were shipped directly to my wife.

Great stereo system at the time.

The sadder part. I couldn't find it anywhere in the house. Don't remember getting rid of it, don't remember selling it.

I did put out a very nice NAD tuner and casette player/recorder. It did not sell. Sarah suggested we give it to a local charity.

I refused. It's still on the shelf in the garage.

Jerry, it's hard giving up that stuff we bought back in the day.

Do you guys realize that anyone under 30 years old who will read this has no idea what you are talking about ? They're walking around with a 2"x3"x1/4"thick gadget with "earbuds" that you can hardly see and they probably paid 1/2 as much for them as we did for our whole systems way back when ! (of course the dollars were worth much more then)

That is so true, however there are a few younger guys who like them, my oldest son for one.
He thinks old vinyl sounds much richer than CDs do.

Me, I am happy that CDs don't scratch & skip 'cause I can't tell the difference!

Well, the stuff is gone now. And you're right, I got nowhere in the same country what I had wrapped up in it, but that's electronics. The turntable alone was originally $1,041.97 in today's dollars.

I was thinking, "I don't have an Effingham Cargill or a Bark River Gunny."

Yeah.....kinda blows to hear that Jerry....not just about the money, but the portion of life is well, over.

I hear you Jerry, but I also realize "stuff" that was once important can diminish in value to us as other interests take the place of the old ones. We share your feelings, been there and done that too - enjoy your new knives! OH

Vinyl is making a small comeback amongst the hipsters.
My son is out hitting the pawns shops looking for a turntable as I type this. He discovered his parents vinyl stash in the closet of old Beatles, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rolling Stones, etc.

Years ago, my then adolescent/teenaged younger son asked for a Led Zeppelin cassette for his birthday. This was pre-CD days.

I walked over to the entertainment center, pulled out albums I, II and III and asked him which one.

He was flabbergasted.

I recorded all three on blank cassettes that I already had.

Charlie, sounds like we grew up in the same era, raised by parents who lived through the depression!
