Seventy one years ago today, on December 7, 1941, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on the island of Oahu Hawaii, killing 2,403 wounding 1,104 more. That morning the Japanese ignited the fires of war in the Pacific that would last for four and a half years at the cost of 111,606 Americans killed or missing and 253,142 wounded.

Including military and civilians, by wars end, depending on the source, the Japanese lost approximately 2.6 to 3.1 million.


Footnote: We all know about the six million Jewish lives taken by the German Holocaust but what you may not know is during the 1930s and 1940s the Japanese killed an estimated 18 million in China, Korea, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) and other Asian countries, during what has come to be known as The Asian Holocaust.

We visited the Pearl Harbor Memorial,back in 2002__ amazing that the oil/fuel, is still flowing to the top of the water from the sunken ship,USS Arizona**

We must never forget.

The virtual pass we gave the Japaneze on The Asian Holocaust is lamentable. Probably based on politics and economics.

Read the book, The Rape Of Nanking, for just a glimpse of the Japaneze mindset in the 30's and 40's.

Interestingly, we had a patient years ago, whose name was Pearl Harbor Washburn. Her husband was a local newspaper writer.

Her name before she was married was Pearl Harbor and she was born December 7th, 1932.

Strange beyond explanation.

Charlie, that's the kind of stuff you just can't make up.


For the atrocity of that day, with an identifiable enemy, we went to war and triumphed four and a half years later. Though an ugly period in our history, life was so much simpler then.

9/11 came and went. Over eleven years later we still aren't sure who we're fighting and some don't want to believe there is anyone to fight.

A heart felt thank you to 'The Greatest Generation'.

Spent a whole day at the Pearl last December 2011. Got to talk to and hang out with some of the remaining Living Survivors and hear some of their stories first hand. It's a day I'll never forget!

When I visited the Arizona memorial I was really struck by how many family members died together. As you probably know, keeping family members together was an inducement to join the Navy. So on the memorial wall you see fathers and sons, brothers, sometimes 3 or 4 family members together.

I understand the Navy didn't change their policy until the loss of the Sullivan brothers during the war.

O'Sullivan, I believe it was.
