Ah, that one is rather easy, but there are 2 animals that I'm aware of for catgut. In addition to violins, catgut is used for those sutures that are absorbed by the body. No, it's not from a cat. Natural gut used in tennis rackets comes from cattle but that is not catgut. The 2 sources that I know of are much smaller animals somewhere over 100 lbs. I'll let someone else answer this one. Maybe we should have a trivia area in the off topic forums as a better place for these questions/answers. I've always been a trivia buff, don't know why. Not like I will ever use this stuff for anything really useful.

I don't know one actor from another though, nor do I know anything about music, except maybe some western films. I did watch Jeremiah Johnson (a favorite) last night.

I cheated and looked it up

. I won't give it away, but I learned the word originated from kitgut. kit = fiddle.

It started to be known as catgut through misproununciation acording to the source I found.

Wish I knew as much about knives as I do about movies! Duvall's always been one of my favorite actors. For the longest time, I'd always thought his first movie role was as Steve McQueen's cab driver in the movie Bullit. His first on-screen role was actually as Boo Radley in "To Kill a Mockingbird". Good question!

I'm not a big Costner fan.With that being said,there were only 2 reasons I watched and bought that movie.number 1,Robert Duvall,number 2, It was a Western...
I thought he did a much better job than Costner did.Its a great movie!!
Did you see him in the mini series Broken Trail?

Those are BOTH great westerns..Duvall was oustanding in both. (I agree
re" Costner, tho...not a fan). The final "shootout" scene in Open Range is
quickly becoming a cult classic...17 minutes from beginning to end! Great action, and especially sound...watch it in a good HD home theatre
setup, and you feel like the shooting's going on in the next room.

Broken Trail was an Outstanding performance! I think now at Duvall's

age he is just perfect for Western's.

I don't mind Kevin Costner, I

like him better in Westerns, more so then the other type of movies he

makes. That Water World movie was a POS.

I agree,Costner is much better in Westerns...I did like the non Western one he was in with Eastwood and Laura Dern,I think it was called "A Perfect World".I kinda liked that one,anyone else see it?

PS:Westerns and Sci-fi's are my 2 favorite movie genre's,..weird combo,Huh?

You're right..."A Perfect World" is one of those often overlooked pieces of
work...but really good performances by both Eastwood and Costner. I guess I'm not really a fan of some of Costner's more current work. I did enjoy him in Silverado, American Flyers, The Untouchables, Field of Dreams and Wyatt Earp, tho. Bull Durham, too.

Kevin Costner is really good in westerns, he should stick there. Sam Elliot is a perfect western actor, perfect in the cowboy slot. I like Tom Selleck in his westerns. He is a real fan of the old west himself and makes sure his movies are historically accurate, such as Monte Walsh to name one. I liked that one he did in Australia, forget the name. He was a sharp shooter with a .45-110, but that cartridge is not really great for such long shots. As a side note, it made me cringe to see that gun being tossed on the ground. 3 were specially made and they were valued in excess of $100,000.00.

Tom Selleck has taken the mantle of a John Wayne in our Westerns of

No, there was only one John Wayne. He was a perfectionest and practiced everything even his walk for every movie. I have read that he hated horses, but he found a role in westerns and became the sterotypical tough guy cowboy. I think JW stands alone but Tom Selleck is the top cowboy out there today. He loves the old west and is a student of it JW wasn't. Tom Selleck is a better "technician" and that allows him to come accross the way he does.

I don't think there will ever be a better character actor than Sam Elliot in westerns, he just looks the part in everyday life.
