All About Pocket Knives

Hey guys and gals.

I just found this link while surfing. It's looks pretty neat, but I haven't tried it yet myself. It is detailed instructions on how to use Adobe Photo Shop to design yourself a custom knife. Might be of value to all you "custom-a-holics" who are longing to have a custom you designed yourself. What caught my attention was the design of a wharncliff blade.

Looks like a good program for me, I can't draw stick people. I am thinking of a saddlehorn and barlow design, with half-stops. I was thinking of a Barlow with a warncliffe blade, but I will probably stick with a traditional spear blade. I would like to use 1095 for the blades and some pattern welded steel deep blued on the bolsters. Yeah, just ideas, I haven't even drawn it up yet.
But I have 7 scandis, 4 skinners with sheaths, and 5 hunters with sheaths to finish before I can devote any time to it. Slowly picking them off I guess I should post some pictures one of these days.

I'd really love to see those scandi pictures. Something about that knife style that just "fits" my eye perfectly.

Maybe is has something to do with my Norse roots?

I'll be starting those in a month or so. They will go fast and these are a project that is for family members. I harvested some claro walnut burl and buckeye burl from the old family ranch 16 years ago but decided to use the claro walnut since I have enough of that for all 7 knives. The buckeye is outstanding and I had it stabilized at WSSI, but there is not enough for 7 knives.

My Grandfather immigrated from Finland in 1911, so a scandi seemed appropriate. I was thinking of a Puukko, but went with a Damascus steel (er, pattern weldeded) scandi.

The blades are purchased and I just have to come up with a final design. There will be some obsidian (recon) on them since there was a lot of that on the ranch. I will probably use walnut dowels for pins, I like the look of solid wood.

That wood should be great. I've always been a fan of the simpler handle layouts on scandi.....some of the stuff on the market now has way too many layers and inserts, etc, but your idea sounds right on the mark

Your family will be proud to own them.
