All About Pocket Knives

Got this from Muskrat a while ago. Finally got around to it this afternoon. Bacote scales and a try at vine filework. When done I realized the scales must have slipped when clamping and caused quite a gap at the bolsters(first pic). Instead of taking it apart I cut up some brass and ran with it. I then noticed the bolsters aren't completely square. Oh we'll, I'm pretty happy with it. Vines could be tightened up a bit....... Next time.

I really like the look of the line of brass next to the bolsters!

In fitting the handles to the bolsters, I find it helpful to under cut the end of the handles by about 6 degrees of angle.

Also when clamping a bare head I will tap the end of the handle material after I have it clamped, just to be sure it is seated square.
I have also found it to be a truth that ALL clamps slip. I plan on it and correct accordingly sometimes resetting the clamp several times to be sure they are correct.

If that is your first attempt, it is very impressive!
If not your first, it is still very nice!

Just a side note here-
In an "art" such as knife modification where most folks are self taught, many great discoveries are accidental.
That is certainly true in my case at the very least.

Dale, I think that's true of more than just the world of knife repair and modification. Many great and profitable products started out as an attempt to do something entirely unrelated.

Very cool work, and I also like the brass spacer.

Along with what Dale was saying about undercutting the scale, something I do with my scale material is to just lightly knock down the edge where the bolster and liner meet. I find that right at that point, it is difficult to get an exact fit. Just taking down that edge slightly seems to help things out.

Oh yeah, the bail and file work really make your piece stand out. Great job!
