On this day, 3 years ago, I quit smoking, and I feel GREAT!

Just had to say it.

Congratulations Joe. 18 yrs for me & I still want one now and then. Not that vicious desire you experience the first couple of weeks after quitting or even the nagging "wants" that haunt you during the first six months but a vague desire is still there on occasion.

Ain't no easy task Philip.....it tears atcha! Your toes want a cigarette, the cravings are so strong....it's like fighting off a starving bear!


I quit smoking cigarettes almost 7 years ago, but I now enjoy cigars and pipes.

Congrats, Joe. I quit in 1964 and looking back it was a great thing. I had to quit chewing Redman sometime after that and believe me, quitting that wonderful stuff was a real chore.

Nice job FRJ! I know it's a struggle. It's been 11 years for me since I put down the cigs for the final time. My nose is still finely attuned to the scent of one in the air though, I can smell it from across a parking lot...and I gotta admit, it still stirs me to want to light up now and again...but I'm a stubborn one and when I say I'm done, I'm done. I think that's a key attribute of being able to quit successfully, you've gotta have a bit of a stubborn streak in ya!

Plus the idea of making tobacco company execs richer while slowly killing myself pisses me off....

That's good to hear Joe! Never started, so I can't relate what you guys have gone through, but that is something to be proud of, for sure.

I smoked for a total of 30 years and enjoyed an occasional chew as well. I gave it all up nine years ago this past May 7. I count that as my "independence day" because I feel like I was set free from a monster that had kept me bound all those years. It wasn't easy or fun, but it was one of the best things I've ever done for myself and my family. I decided when I quit I'd take the savings from not buying cigarettes and spend it on pocketknives. Some might say I traded one addiction for another.

Congratulations Joe! Think of all the money you didn't give to the tobacco companies.

Thank you for all your nice responces. Interesting remarks. I didn't realize what a big deal it was to start smoking.
It was a huge deal to stop. I was smoking 10 or 12, 15 tops, roll your own cigaretts a day. 97% of smoking was in my shop.
I never smoked in public. Just really happy to be rid of the whole thing.

I figure I have saved over 40,000$
2 packs a day at 5$ a pack = 10$ a day 3650$ a year times 12 years.
That's a lot of money to buy knives with!!!!!!!

Not counting the fact cigs are 9.50+ tax a pack now here in NY

$9.50 a pack! I think they were about $1.50 a pack when I quit.

Go in to NY city, they are 15$ for a pack.

That 40,000 dollars saved is really more than that.
Remember that's after tax dollars.
So you have to make 50,000 to spend 40,000$

I bought a car with the money saved.
Wife told me, "quit smoking, you can buy that Mustang you been wanting"
Did it, bought it and I still have it.

Even though I still get the urge now and then (weak though it may be), I'm very glad I quit. Those self righteous, holier than thou folks that never smoked and all full of themselves are quick to tell you so, irritate me no end. I just want to punch 'em in the throat when they tell a smoker to "just quit", like it surely must be the easiest thing in the world stupid, so why are you still smoking. They're talking through their a** 'cause their mouth knows better. Grrr.

Congratulations! It's a big accomplishment I know. I'm not a smoker, but I surely do love my chaw, and I do mean love it. I'm from Kentucky after all. All we ever knew was baccer! Everybody who owned more thans' acre of ground raised it. We all used it some how or another, around these parts our while lives was tobacco.

Things have changed somewhat, but I still love my twixt cheek and gum. I need to quit, I surely do. Someday.

I know you were not referring to me.

I have friends and employees that smoke, and see how hard it is for them to try to quit. It's not my place to judge them, anyway.

That would be like me trying to give up knives...
