All About Pocket Knives

Hello out there. Great day for yard sales today. Picked up two near mint Kalingas. (That's another forum I know, don't beat me up yet) I also picked up an Old Timer 150T that I'm puzzled about its origin or manufacture date as it has the delrin handles, nickel silvel rivets and name shield, correct length, blade thickness, upswept tip, notched thumbguard (counted ten) but it doesn't have a single manufacture stamp or Pat Pend or model number anywhere. The sheath is thick genuine leather and it is stamped as such. Here are some pictures to show, If anybody can venture a guess, its better than mine. For what is worth got it from the same person I got the Kalingas but no info was provided.

I've seen a couple like that, I always just figured they were made on Monday morning.

It's called a deer slayer manufactured 64-97 if yours has no walden stamp, would be after 73.

Yes it is, according to the research article a Deerslayer mfg 1964 thru 1997. However no stamp of any kind at all? Isn't it a bit unusual?

Nothing is unusual when they made Schrade knives.I have some made by Schrade without stamps.they made contract knives and did not stamp them and some of their seconds they removed the stamps.

The tang stamp was ground off. They stamped the 15OT in different places over the years.
I have a wall display from about 1974 and the stamp is located on the place that I circled in blue on your knife.

I will see if I can get a pic of mine to show the stamp, but it is still sealed in the display case (and I am leaving it that way) so I am not sure how well the pic will turn out through the glass using the flash.

I suspect stamp was ground off because it was a second, even though you will probably never find the flaw for which it was downgraded.

Well, the pic came out better than I hoped.
You can see the stamp is located on the same place that has been ground down on teufelshund's knife. The sharp eyed among you will notice the French writing in the lower left of the display.
I got this Display from Charlie (upnorth) a few years ago in exchange for some knives I made for him.
Charlie lives in British Columbia Canada and the display came from a friend of his who was the Schrade distributor for Western Canada in the 1970s.

That makes sense, could be a second, however wouldn't the act of grinding off the tang stamp render it rather weak? I'm looking at my sharpfingers to gauge how deep the stamp is and that looks like a lot of metal to shave off. I just cleaned this knife and put it under close inspection and I found a minute flaw over the top edge area of the flat side where the stamp would have been placed. Which may indicate that the inspection process might have removed this knife before it got to the stamping step. Wouldn't be less time consuming to inspect the run before you stamp them than regrinding afterwards?

I was in the Corps a bit before your time, 1970-1973, about 3-1/2 years.
I was in country in 1972 with the First Marine Air Wing.

Welcome aboard. You've got mid-watch. Always good to have a Corpsman around in case you bring something unexpected back from town with you.

One of my first field experiences during a Med cruise on the island of Sardinia was stitching up a Lcpl left hand that he stabbed himself, playing with what else but a very sharp Buck 110 he just purchased at the ship's store. The USS Ponce (Gator freighter). Come to think of it that was about the only knife they used to sell. When the Gunny found out he chewed out the Lcpl and almost busted him for "Destruction of Government Property" and the knife got confiscated till he got back to Conus.

You are too right. I considered buying a set for a Christmas give away here on the forum....... until I saw they are made in the land which shall not be named. That put the kabosch on that.

Ran into a career Corpsman just the other day who said he had some time in the Fleet Can't remember the circumstances to save my life. I remember asking what rank he retired as and he said Chief (E-7).
