All About Pocket Knives

I have off work this week so my son and I took a road trip to the Yuengling Brewery in Pottsville, Pa. yesterday. It's been in business since 1829 and is the oldest brewery in the country. It is still owned by the Yuengling family, the sixth generation is working there now. We were there about 10 years ago but my son was too young to sample the beer at the end of the tour. He's 21 now and enjoyed it more this time around.

They have a big new brewery about three miles away to help meet the demand, but this old one is worth visiting.

Any Yuengling enthusiasts in the house?

YES! For the price it is the best beer in my book. If I could buy stock in the company, I would. Looks like a fun trip vikingdog. I hope to make it down that way in the not to distant future.

Oh Yeah!!!

Yuengling is one of my favorite beers. Earlier in the summer a friend went out to PA and surprised me with a 12 pack of Yuengling Lager at about 10:00 at night. During the past month, Linnea and her daughters went to Philadelphia and brought back a case of Yuengling Lager of which I only got 18. Mmm, Mmm, Mmm. It's gone already but I sure enjoyed it while I had it.

When I traveled for business, several times I would bring back a case of Yuengling on the plane with me and always got positive comments.

In '07 we had a reunion at MCAS Cherry Point NC and I was very surprised to see the bar in the hotel on Atlantic Beach was serving Yuengling. Found Yuengling in Florida in '12 when we were down there. Another pleasant surprise. I'm glad to see they're expanding their distributorship without compromising the quality.

I found out about it many years ago when taking some training down in Harrisburg with a coworker. We discovered it in the hotel lounge where we were staying. Found out the brewery was in Pottsville, not too far off the highway. We were driving back to NH, and didn't have a set time to be back, so decided to stop by. Cool place. I bought some beer tumblers, a mug, hat, and a sweatshirt for my wife. I asked about kids shirts, but the woman said the Mr. Yuengling doesn't advertise that way.

I am fortunate that one of my present coworkers travels to PA occasionally, so he is nice enough to pick up a case for me when he goes down.

It was my pleasure Joe. From what our tour guide said Yuengling may be expanding to your area soon. They bought the defunct Stroh's brewery in Florida so now they have a lot of the east coast covered. They are as far west as Ohio but they have no plans to expand beyond that.

The Oktoberfest beer just came out a few days ago and I grabbed a case today. They don't brew much and it goes fast.

I hope you get to Pottsville Beechtree, it's a nice little town. The tour is free and there's a nice gift shop/museum with very affordable prices. There's two tours a day 10:00am and 1:30pm, get there early.

That Yuengling Lager is what saved the company Jerry. Yuengling was a funky and inexpensive beer when I was a kid. Nobody wanted to drink the old time local beers then. They went for Miller, Budweiser and Genesee which was a New York state beer that's still being made. Dick Yuengling bought the company from his dad and started making the lager which was the original beer they made in the 1800's. The rest is history.

He won't sell beer on the premises either Glenn, he doesn't want to compete with the local taverns and distributors.

I've always heard about Yeuling's beer but never had one--I miss drinking Drewers think it was a Candian style beer-had a Candian Mounty on the bottle any way's but haven't seen it since the ole man quit dinking it in the 60's--Stough's made in Florida ?? really my mother used to work for some of the Stourgh's family think Miller brewing tried picking that up about 10 yrs. back but it wasn't the same as Detroit River water beer--send some of that Yeuling's this way!

Their Christmas sampler cases are the best! I get a few every year, I live in Pa so its sold everywhere. I came across this old bottle opener not to long ago too

I have a brother-in -law who is originally from Pa. He was ecstatic when Yuengling became available here in Ga. not to long ago.

Being that I stopped drinking several years ago, I've never tried it but I used to drink a lot of SweetWater which is locally brewed here in Atlanta and my favorite beer back when. It wasn't any where neeeeeeeer as old a Yuengling though.

Nice opener Gino. I saw a few vintage Yuengling advertising pocket knives in the display there. They looked like Imperials but I couldn't tell for sure. I'd like to find one at the flea market sometime.

No knives here, but I did pull out some Yueng bling...(the hats have some "use" on them)

I don't drink beer, but I certainly have the opportunity to try Yuengling. I did a product search on their website and there are dozens of retail outlets selling it here in Birmingham.

I started bringing it back with me from the PX in 1997 and was delighted to find it being stocked here in the south about six years ago - I am a Yuengling fan - the beer is good, very good, and it is still American made, owned, and operated. OH

.....this may be a good example of my fading memory, but, when I was stationed at ft. Belvoir, va. in 1959, I would have sworn the army war college was located there, I know for a fact that there were more generals on that base than PFC's like me!!!..............

The Army War College opened in 1904 at Washington Barracks (Fort McNair VA) - the original location now houses the National Defense University. The War College closed during WW-II and reopened at Carlisle Barracks PA in the early 1950's. Carlisle Barracks is the oldest post in the US Army (lowered the British flag and hoisted the American flag during the revolution) and the second oldest in North America - it has housed the Indian School, the Army Medical Corps School, and the Military Police School at different times in it's history. OH

Every year on Thanksgiving night the guys in my family do a blind taste test of 25-30 beers set up by the women. We get about 2 ounces, write our score down, eat a cracker and go to the next one. Last year Yuengling's Porter won.
It's great fun, I recommend it highly.
