All About Pocket Knives

Hi everyone,
Here is another knife I have just finished, it's like most of my knives taken from a Victorian pattern book.


This knife has mother of pearl scales with brass webbs, nickel silver bolsters and pins, the top bolster is a double hollow bolster,


The blade and spring is carbon steel, professionally hardened and tempered..

The blade is a square end tang for easy opening and as described in this book.


The blade is mirror polished and sharpened on a stone and finished off on the oil stone.

Beautiful knife. What precautions do you take working with mother of pearl? I have soo many allergy problems I've never tried working with any pearl. It sure is pretty though. Mark.

I know what you mean, I have a strong extracter and always where a mask, And always work with my workshop door open to help clear the dust.

What a beautiful knife. The teardrop cap is nice. I like the ease in the frame at the nail nick. Everything is superb.
How did you learn to make knives?
How long have you been making them?

I learnt how to make knives through some of the last little mesters in Sheffield, unfortunately most have long since retired.
I 1st became interested in knives and making knives at the age of 9, my dad rented a workshop in a old cutlery works in sheffield and as the firm had closed some years before on the site was many old parts to practise on, and watch the people who still had workshops on there still working, before everyone was moved out to make way for demolition,
I have a long list in my family of cutlers, and hand grinders, although it skipped a generation as my dad never went into the trade, I've brought it back into my family.

It really did, it's hard to explain how this place had the biggest influence on me, every thing from the smells the lay out of the building the history, I think how this building was as a young child I had never seen anything like it before, I have always liked any history, and going to my dads workshop was like going back in time. I knew at a young age that I wanted to make knives, my dad is French polisher, and rented a workshop on the site back in the 1970's when it was a busy and thriving works, when I started going to work with my dad during school holidays and some weekends the workshop at the side of my dads was empty so I set up in there with a few small machines. And my collection of machines and tools have grown and all in my new workshop today.
