All About Pocket Knives

I thought we had a thread devoted to Old Timer variants; i.e. knives bearing the Old Timer name or tang stamp and another company name on the knife. But since I couldn’t find that topic, I decided to start a new one.

I know John Primble had 3 of the Old Timer stockman patterns that wore John Primble tang stamps.
I know Sears had a similar knife made by Schrade with the Old Crafty shield. Sears also had a large number of Schrade Old Timer patterns made that looked like Old Timers but did not wear the Old Timer name.


I also have several examples of the True Value Hardware Master Mechanic MM Old Timers. I will have to find more pictures, but here are some of the MM89.
Recently I found an Old Timer that was new to me, the TW Old Timer for Trust Worthy Hardware. This is a Trust Worthy sign posted in another topic a few years ago.

I am sure there are other variants of Old Timer patterns that were made as SFOs for many other companies. I am especially interested if they have the Old Timer name on the shield or an OT tang stamp number or if they are an obvious copy of an Old Timer made by Schrade for another company.

I had not seen the Old Timer made in Ireland and I am with you on that Grant; I have my doubts about it.
All the rest are pretty much above question in my mind.

Dave, I don't recall seeing the 2OT with the Craftsman shield.

They left out the sheepfoot, spey and Wharncliffe blades and substituted a pen blade!
Do you have any history to go with the knife?

Looks like they used a 12OT blade when they assembled a 72OT.


Here is a 50OT with bone handles. I just found another one, a shell handled Diamond Edge with an Ulster 58OT blade in it.
This is the only shell handled Old Timer I have seen.

Dale.The Ulster Old timer 500 is every hard to find.
The one I have has 5OT tang stamp.
Also I have a 296Y ( 96OT )

Here is another one .Its a Old Timer 970TY.That's what it was called when purchased .

No history, but I do not think it was done at the factory, at least not as a released edition. The front of the frame has a 33OT cutout, like it should have the pen knife up on the same end as the clip. The mod was nicely executed, it's a single spring, with offset catch bits. I did not keep this one, kind of wish I would have. There was no blade rub, and good snap. Handy design.

I agree 100%! Very handy design!
I am very fond of that blade combination in a single spring knife, (I guess that is a classic penknife design).
The only thing that would make it better to my taste is to make the master blade a Wharncliffe instead of a clip blade.

I have not seen a 114OT with the Trust Worthy tang stamp, but you can bet I am looking!

I found this Old Timer variant thread and thought I would push it to the top and show off my latest find....
Old Crafty 9547.... Match Strike pull and an unusual grind on the blade above the pull..... Interesting.

I also have an Old Crafty 95071 in my collection.... And an Old Crafty 9545.... Also... I have a couple of Master Mechanic Old Timers...
MM89 (with the upside down shield....LOL)..... And a Master Mechanic MM108..... That is what I have for now.
Y'all got any others in your collection since 2014???

Here is a Primble 8OT in bone, presumably from the 1959-1961 time frame. If I can find it, it is available.

I don't have any of the Belknaps yet. If you can lay hands on it, shoot me a PM.
Is that a double stamp on the blade?

Schrade built in the late 1970s, basically a black sawcut Delrin 8OT . . . very nice!

Seem to accumulate them...and have gotten all of these in multiple knife purchases...
All are Scrade USA made. The top 3 are 108 OT stockman knives. The bottom right 2 blade is a 104OT and the bottom left is a single blade 18OT...it has a liner lock. Maybe the smallest liner lock knife I have.

Neat old thread. Here's an early 58OT in genuine (sparkly plastic) meerschaum. It's the first one I've seen with the pattern on the reverse and milled liners.

I managed to secure a Primble over the weekend. I won this one on an ebay auction.
It's a Primble 935. it's not in the best shape but the blades are full. I get my happiness from knives by cleaning them up so I will get my happys from this one!
