All About Pocket Knives

This thing was the biggest PITA project I've had in a really long time. Was nice to be challenged after so many ho-hum jobs i've been doing lately. This belonged to the owners grandfather and it was in a house fire. Spring had no temper, rusty, pitted, the liners and bolsters were annealed which made it really difficult to work with without totally disfiguring everything. The hatchet blade was a lesson in polishing, thought I'd never get the finish even! I still need to reproduce a sheath so if you have one you're willing to loan me for about a week to use as a guide I would greatly appreciate it and cover shipping both ways.

There's roughly 4 hard hours of grinding sanding and buffing on the hatchet alone, probably another 1-1.5 hrs in the blade

I believe it. Really excellent work!
I think most folks don't consider the cost of the abrasives consumed in a job like this either.

I never have the heart to charge for all the time I put into family heirloom knife repairs, most folks couldn't afford it.
I just like a good challenge and hopefully I don't lose money on a job too often!

yeah abrasives really start to add up. I can usually clean your average 2-3 blade pocket knife in about 30- 45 minutes. But then factor in the cost of abrasives, compound, wheel wear, return shipping and there is where all the investment is.
