All About Pocket Knives

I should know this, but -----
I read here a while back where one of our members was going to "oil up his stags real well." With GEC putting out so many fine stag handles, I have accumulated a small pile. What kind of oil should I put on my stag handles?

Mineral Oil

I use a Q-tip to apply mineral oil then let it sit several hours before wiping the handles down with a clean, dry cloth.

isnt there several types of

Just curious here if the mineral oil that is being used is for preventive or corrective maintenance? Just to clarify, I am all for preventive maintenance and have used mineral oil on stag before.

If you use mineral oil don't substitute baby oil as it is just mineral oil with perfume added.I had a couple really old stag handled bowies that the stag had dried out and I just put some 3-in1 oil on a rag and rubbed it in.Doesn't seem to have had any adverse effect and that was several years ago.

I use it to keep my stag handles from drying out and developing cracks. It also gives the stag a bit of a sheen that I like. It works well on bone handles as well.

How about Danish Oil ? Will that work ?

So I have been keeping some packets of silica in the drawer with my knives. Am I making a mistake and should I be worried about drying out my stag and bone handles?
Also does Renwax accomplish the same thing as mineral oil in protecting the stag / bone handles? Thanks in advance for any help.

I do not think that the silica packs will hurt the knives at all. It is not water that dries out of stag handles, but the natural oils. In fact, the presence of too much moisture is probably detrimental. I do not know for sure, but I imagine that the Renwax will help seal the pores and keep the natural oils present and preserve the handles.
Someone may know more about this, but it sounds to me as if you are doing exactly the right thing to preserve your knives.

Treejakal, I do the same and keep drying packs in with my knives. I tell you what I have run into though, I have 1 roll of knives in a black roll with the red elastic straps and the straps have glued to the knives and when you pull the strap off it leaves a residue on the knife. I’ve gotta get time to clean that whole roll of about 40 knives with goo gone.

As far as oil on stag, mineral is my choice for them for sure.

But just remember like many things less is best. Just a light wipe, wipe it in then let it sit to soak in.

I wipe lightly with mineral oil and wipe off immediately then apply Ren Wax. I do the same with bone and some woods.

I use Renaissance wax. It will also prevent rust on the blades. A 200 ml can will last you for years.

Likewise luckydog, Renaissance wax on my guns too! Great stuff!

Why do you wipe it off immediately? Seems that will defeat the purpose if you dont let it soak in.
I had a stag knife that had dried out and soaked the whole knife if mineral oil. I won’t hurt any part of the knife.
Also if one cant find Mineral oil use baby oil it is only mineral oil with a fragrance added. Plus your knives will smell good

I actually leave it on awhile then wipe. I don’t soak the whole knife though. Then renaissance wax all of it.

Soaking the entire knife would only be in an extreme case.
