All About Pocket Knives

Here is a 1939 Band-Aid advertisement I thought was neat to see. It shows three boys with one of them playing some kind of game dropping a pocket knife. I cannot see the knife clearly but it looks like an Ebony handle 2-blade jack with a nice shield!

How times have changed, this was when boys were allowed to have knives and were expected to get cut!

Awesome old ad.

Looks like the game objective is to drop the knife through the circle you form with your hand without slicing yourself up. Glad I never learned that game. Best played with a dull knife.

I think that young lad's aim may be slightly off. From that position of release he probably needed the whole can on Band-Aids!

I hate to admit this publicly...but,....I did that when I was a kid. Yeah, I wasn't very bright then. Still not very bright but at least I don't do THAT

Do you suppose any kids today play mumbley-peg? I do not think my mother or my friends mother's approved of it, but in retrospect they probably thought it was better than other stuff we could be doing. How did we ever survive: playing with pocket knives, riding in the back seat with no seat belt, dad smoking in the front of the car: guess we were just lucky!

Dad and/or Mom smoking in the front seat or in the house might catch up with you yet.
Second hand smoke as a youngster has been the apparent cause of lung cancer in non-smoking adults of our generation.

The stuff that was just considered normal back then ... I helped my Dad and his codger friends make sugar cane syrup: the mill was this big thing with exposed gears three feet in diameter powered by a belt from a tractor. No guards on anything, but my Dad said that since the mill sometimes stalled if we shoved too much cane into it at once, he figured that a strong man could stall it before it killed him ... That was a different world.

I broke down and bought this.
