All About Pocket Knives

Here is the explanation: Herman Williams was working on a couple knives for a '83 red bone Heritage set for me. The Heritage set never had a fixed blade knife as most of Schrade's sets have. The '83 set didn't have the 233 jack as it was added in '85. My first knife was given to me by my father, a Schrade Walden 233, so I have a special fondness for that model. Herman was going to put red bone on a Sharpfinger and and a '85 2331 so I could have a set the way I would have liked to have seen it made. Now, I do not pretend to be smarter or more knowledgeable than the people that designed the set, but who of us doesn't wish, at one time or another, to have been able to provide a little input in the design of a particular knife or set. Herman didn't have any 1983 Heritage shields so I sent him a couple knives to provide shields for the project. There was nothing wrong with the donors so Herman was going to re-handle them for me as well. He put some beautiful brown bone that he did the jigging on, something he learned at Schrade, on the 8041 whittler but when it came to the 2941 trapper, he found that the bone I had requested wasn't available. I wasn't sure what I wanted so I asked him to put plain white bone on it, no shield. The result, in my opinion, was spectacular. A very classy looking knife, highlighted with nickel silver bolsters, but not flashy. I discussed this with Herman. He has agreed to help me put together a collection of various Schrade folders and fixed blades, re-handled in white bone. As it turns out, the bone came from the Schrade factory. Herman's schedule and my finances will dictate the extent of this collection. If there is any interest in this by other members of AAPK, I will continue to post pictures of the various models.

Love your work Doug(and Herman's). That white bone is super, and unusual. You don't see white bone being used very often.
I look forward to seeing some more in the near future, in wall displays.

Thanks to everyone for their comments. A display frame arrived today so I will post pictures when I have it organized. There are about 8 more folders I hope to add and share pictures of.

This is the first incarnation of my White Bone display. I hope to add a few more to this with Herman's help.

This WhiteBone collection has taken on a life of it's own. I am currently working on a larger frame for the display, as there are a few more to be added. I'd be willing to guess that this is the largest collection of white bone Schrades in existence, with all credit to Herman Williams.

That is definitely one of the most unique collections I've seen, with some great old patterns in it. I'm really liking that electrician knife with that white bone. More fixed blades on the way? Or maybe a 51OT?

The 51OT is distinct pattern but I doubt that it will be included in this collection. The larger pieces of white bone are difficult to find. There will be a buzzsaw trapper with a half serrated clip, a 61OT, a muskrat with a gut hook blade and a 225OT...the Son of a Gun. The only fixed blade that is in the works, at this time, is the large Bowie. This collection has become much larger than was ever anticipated. Only time will tell where and when it will end.

I don't have them in a display frame yet, but here is the first picture of them all together. There are 4 Schrade I-XL's and a 280 Daddy Barlow..the rest are Herman's work. Only the Muskrat pattern is repeated with a S 787, a SW 787 single backspring with a half serrated main, a 787 with a fully serrated spey and a 877UH guthook.

Thanks Dale. I passed on a lot of other knives so I could put them together, and well worth it. I've finally gotten around to working on a display case for them. Hopefully it won't take as long to finish, as it did to get started on it.

I finally got all 3 display boxes built. There are a total of 59 Schrades, all customized by Herman Williams. The beginning The frames were made from old maple kitchen cabinet doors that I picked up at a yard sale a few years ago. The 1/4" glass added a lot of weight, about 3-1/3 pounds per square foot, but allows the displays to be tight enough that only the White Bone Bowie needed a pin under it to keep it from sliding. I used 3/4" pine for the back so that I could drive a finish nail through the fabric for a knife support where needed.All the boxes have 5 hinges and 5 latches, 3 along the side and top and bottom center. No danger of the glass flexing. The center display weighs 44 pounds empty.4 little hook and eye gate latches hold each box to the frame. Blocking around the frame keeps the displays centered.The entire frame is on hinges and can be laid flat so the boxes can be removed and worked on. I used cabinet hinges and attached them to the back of the dresser with the screws going through a 1" aluminum angle 90 that runs the length of the display. The support board had to be kept flush to the front of the hinges, so I cut another piece of trim that is removeable to hide the hinges.

That is an absolute beautiful display you have their. I mean from the Phenominal knives to the Outstanding display cabinet. That sure is a great set up you have there, and something to be extremely proud of! Fantastic!
