Reloading Ammo

Post by sunburst »

Does anyone out there do any reloading of their ammo?? I used to do it more often but my schedule made it hard to enjoy the target practice end of it..

I just picked it up again here lately and plan on letting the lead out this week..

Here's my setup with my tack driver Ruger Mark II 22-250, which is about all I load lately..

Yeah Ralph, I reload all my cartridges. I'm not a big hunter, but I love target shooting. .38 indoor range and .357 outdoor. I have a Dillon square deal I got 15 years ago. Nice set up you got there. Kelley

Oh Yea, I used to shoot NRA bullseye 50 ft inside and 50 yards out. I used Ruger MK IIs for the rim fire and S&W modal 14 .38 cal. wad cutters for center fire. Also used a colt gold cup NM .45 for center fire. It got to be that my lead level was way up there so my doctor said slow down for a while. The lead levels where caused by poor ventilation inside. I load all my handgun ammo with a RCBS piggyback unit that screws to my rockchucker press. I also load all my own hunting ammo.Shooting, reloading, hunting and knives sure gets in your blood how about it ? Mike

I started to reload when I was 16, before I had a drivers license even. In 1974, in California the laws were that I could not buy ammo for rifles until I was 18 and for pistols it was 21. Something similar to that, time erodes the memory. Anyhow, I could not buy .22 rimfire ammo, but at 16 I could buy all the primers, powder, bullets and empty cartridges I wanted. My next door neighbor got me started. He had an RCBS press that was out of production, an A1, I think and I bought a Rockchuker from RCBS as well as all the other equipment. For shotguns I had a MEC 600 jr.
The first cartridge I handloaded I had to make many changes, a .308win. I bought several hundred rounds of .308 military brass (7.62 NATO) from Traders in Oakland, Ca who may be closed now due to dozens (maybe 100's) of registration violations, I believe it was. Anyhow I had to buy a set of min spec dies from RCBS, the brass was so thick on the military stuff. I only had that problem on one rifle. I originally planned to use Dupont 3031 on the .308 with the military brass, but the chage on the chart over filled the brass, because of the cartrigde thickness and use of min. spec. dies. Good thing I had a patient tutor next door. ::nod::

It always amazes me that I could not buy .22 ammo, but I could buy all the powders I wanted. The laws have changed.

I haven't handloaded in some time now, I just shoot a couple 30.06 rifles, a Remington 7400 and a Remington 700 and I can get great ammo off the shelf in that cartridge these days. Also, I don't shoot a case a week like I used to.

I really enjoyed handloading for many different cartrigdes while I did it, but there are way to many things I like to do. ::shrug:: I sold my handloading equipment to a good friend, fairly cheap and I gave my brother the MEC600 jr and he still uses it.
