Camillus #23 makeover

This is a Camillus #23 that Ken (Paladin 51) sent me for makeover. Ken was instrumental in helping me get the Oregon shields that I have been trying to get for several years. Ken did all the legwork and contacted the machine shop that could cut these for me. In return I gave his knife for makeover with one of the Oregon shields. I really appreciated all the work that he went to, to make the shields happen!

These are really lousy pictures. Most of the time it was raining and I was forced to take pictures in the shop. The one day that I got a couple pictures outside the sunlight was so bright the pictures were not very good. My apologies for the lousy pictures.

Here is a knife Ken sent me, before it was totally apart. I am beginning the process of cutting the pins.

Here I have the knife inverted on my vise to cut the remaining pins.

Here is the knife in pieces.

In this picture I am pressing the pins out with an arbor press.

Here I have put the pins in the knife to do a trial fit.

I have the knife assembled and in a contraption called a “Knife Makers Vice.” This device is very handy for holding the knife when inlaying the shields, whether I am using the Foredom drill press or just using the Foredom handpiece alone.

Prior to etching the blade, I took this picture outside.

Regarding the 2nd picture: No, I did not hurt my finger while working on this knife.
I was attacked in he kitchen by a Kamikaze Japanese handmade kitchen knife. It was either ER superglue and wear the splint for 2 or 3 days or get stitched up. I went with the superglue & splint, (made me feel more at home).

Awesome looking knife Dale! And I dig the super glue and splint. Beats stitches in my book ::tu:: And the knife gives me an idea. I think I have a couple of those big ol' #23's. Need to visit Culpeppers! Thanks for pics of the knife as well as all the inspiration!

Oh my Dale, that is a beauty! That bone looks great, and the shield really sets things off.

The 23 is, in my opinion, and underappreciated pattern. It's also quite a handful of knife.

Great job!
