Kobalt Utility Knife Repair
A few years ago I bought a blue "Kobalt" multi-blade utility knife from Lowes. Each blade locks in the open position.
It included a razor utility knife with replaceable blades.
The knife is held together by two "Chicago Screw" type rivets with paired notches on the heads.
The other day, I was using the knife to cut, trim and place some of that black garden weed barrier sheeting in some planting beds in front of the house.
When finished, I realized that one of the Chicago Screws had come undone and I had lost one half of it. I searched the grass, but did not find it. If it came off in the bed, it is now covered with the sheeting and four inches of red mulch, plus the multiple loropetalums I planted there.
I have the knife, one half of the threaded rivet and one little nylon bushing that fell from between a liner and one of the blades.
I probably need to disassemble the knife in order to put it back together properly, if I can actually do that .
Anybody have any idea where to obtain these threaded rivets or anybody here capable of repairing the knife if I sent it to you?
Or should I just try to buy another. They are not especially expensive, but they are quite handy.

OK, then.
Problem solved, if they still sell the knives.

Re: Kobalt Utility Knife Repair
Lowes replaced the knife today, no questions asked.
I noticed the packaging on the new one contained a logo that read:
"NO HASSLE / 100% / GUARANTEED".
Thanks everyone.

Re: Kobalt Utility Knife Repair
Charlie, Lowe's is my favorite home improvement store. I like their products, prices, atmosphere and 10% veterans discount. Thanks to you (and Josh) I now have one more thing to add to the list of things I like about Lowe's.
I've been infatuated with those lock-back utility knives since I first saw one but have not been able to bring myself to buy one because of the country of origin. We all have our favorites and this Stanley is mine. So much so that I have two, one for the house and one for the garage. It just feels 'right' in my hand.

Re: Kobalt Utility Knife Repair
I bought the knife here in Alabama, from my local Lowes, where 99% of the employees have round eyes.
Is there nothing in your home or car not made in America?
What kind of computer are you using?
The knife has three locking blades; a plain knife blade, a serrated blade and the utility blade that accepts double ended, razor sharp utility blades. Comes in a nylon belt pouch.
$15.00

I openly confess to being a hypocrite when it comes to this issue. The whole thing becomes very involved so instead of driving myself crazy(ier), I pick and choose my battles. Truth be told, I'm not very good at it.RobesonsRme.com wrote:I bought the knife here in Alabama, from my local Lowes, where 99% of the employees have round eyes.

Re: Kobalt Utility Knife Repair
Understood.
I realized long ago that it would not be possible to "Buy American" totally.
I do what I can.
I drive a GMC, Sarah a Mustang and both vehicles were purchased used. We've had multiple Mazdas, but Mazda is owned by Ford Motors and they are built here.
One cannot buy groceries without including Central or South American veggies and fruits and almost all packaged seafood is from China or Viet Nam.
I looked at Stanley's website and they have a prominent logo/legend that states, "Made In America Using Global Materials" or something similar. So, where do those "Global" materials come from? I don't know and they don't say.
I generally try to support independent, non-union, American companies when I can.
Buying American is a worthy ideal, but really impossible to do completely.
And you are not "crazy".

Is this the utility knife we've been discussing?

Re: Kobalt Utility Knife Repair
Yes, but the one I had had a folding belt clip on the back side that would disappear into the frame. The newer ones do not. However, I removed the belt clip from the old knife as it was one of the blades trying to fall out because of the missing screw and it can be installed into the new knife if I so desire. I checked, it will fit.
When I bought the knife several years ago, it was in a "special" cardboard stand-up display at a very reasonable price, I think under ten dollars.
I've removed three rooms of carpet and padding with it.
I like this knife.
You won't be able to keep up with that little blade guard, though. It disappeared tout suit.
